Vacuum Guage (or Mechanics 101)

my next door neighbor has a vacuum gauge test kit which he believes can not only diagnose all kinds of engine ills but also detect tooth decay and cure warts.

Dumb question. Where do you hook up the vacuum gauge on a '65 MK2 xk engine?

It would seem that splicing into the hose from the engine breather to the air cleaner would detect crankcase vacuum or pressure. Otherwise I assume you measure from vacuum hose that runs from the intake manifold to the brake booster?

thanks in advance

To the small vacuum hose or copper tube going between the front carb and the distributor vacuum advance unit.

Not the breather or air cleaner.

Brake booster hose would also work but is usually too big for the gauge hose to fit.

I ran mine from there, and another manifold vacuum spigot further forward, (XJ motor)

make sure there is no-one-way valve between the gauge and manifold vacuum!
