Water inside top filler area

The chrome tops of my gas tanks, when I open them up to fill up if it rains hard the surrounding area fills up with water. I don’t think water is getting in the tanks because the rubber stopper seals seem to stop any water getting in the tanks. I also have a 1987 and a 1984 XJs and there seems to be moisture inside this area on the other cars but not actual water, Is there a fix for this, and should I be concerned?

Hi Chris, it sounds like the drains are blocked. Look for them in the bottom rear of the filler recess. A tube runs from behind that point to just behind the rear wheel. Pine needles and other rubbish close off the tube resulting in your problem. You might have to rod them out or similar. Paul

I use an old bass guitar string but a stiff electrical wire will also work.

I dd it and it worked perfectly. Thank you, Rob.
