What should i be aware of when looking at a X type

My brother called tonight after being contacted by a friend who is trying to sell an 02 X Type. Details are extremely vague so far and i have requested more info and pictures. So…its a 2002 XType 2.5 liter, with a second engine $800 Claims it sat for 10 years and the replacement engine is “good”

So is this a waste of time? Or a parts car? Or should i simply run away?

Any thoughts and insight appreciated as i have no experience on this model.

Cheers

Gary

Run Gary run. Just ask yourself, " why did this car sit for 10 years when it’s only 16 years old?"

Story goes the owner became ill and incapacitated. Which would likely lead to varnished fuel. But my spidy sense is tingling that something is maybe off on this whole car story.

I’m concerned if the car has sat for 10 years…it was only driven 6 years before it had an engine problem prompting the owner to find a replacement engine. Doesn’t bode well for reliability of that 2.5 engine. :pensive:

Wonder if seats would fit in my series 2?

Big Red Flags here.

  1. Why the second engine; what happened to the first? These are good engines and shouln’t need to be replaced.

  2. Way, way, way under value. Not anywhere near what to pay for a reliable runner.

  3. Sitting for 10 years is very, very, very bad for machinery. Internal rust and corrosion would cause no end of misery.

I’d run as far away as I could from this car. Things to look for in a reasonable car are rust at the bottom of the A pillars and if the air scoop for cooling the transfer case is in place. Other listers can suggest other things to look out for.

Looking at used cars, I’ve found that seeing little things that the previous owners have let slide, gives me a clue about how they’ve treated the car. If you find a good one, I’d strongly recommend getting a pre-purchase inspection from an independent Jag specialist.

I’ve had my X Type for a few years now and very much enjoy it. It is my ski car; with it’s all wheel drive, shod in ice radials and a Jag roof rack it goes anywhere. I also drive it the most, winter and summer.
