Winter driving

I am a recent Jag owner (less than 6 months) and have been smitten by
the bug. I have gleened an enormous amount of help from all that have
written to this digest. (My check is in the mail).
I am looking to replace my wife’s family Mazda and I need
something
that she will not kill herself in, or lose control of this winter when
the roads develop their sheen of snow and ice. I am a firm believer in
front wheel drive for these conditions and have not heard very many
positive things about JAG winter traction. Since I REALLY want another
JAG I am hoping that you all could help advise me on how bad the sedans
are in the winter and is there some option that JAG offers that I should
look for.
thanks for you help

Bob, as it happens there was a thread on “XJ40s in Snow” last month.
If you missed it, you can look at the archives on the web at
http://www.jag-lovers.org/lists/archives/modern/9804/msg00187.html (for
the start of the thread) or just
http://www.jag-lovers.org/lists/archives/modern to browse or search the
entire modern list. All reports were that the XJ40 is very good in the
snow, possibly due to the fair amount of weight over the rear wheels.
I can’t comment myself, living in San Diego, but maybe this thread will
provide you with the impetus you need to get another Jag for you wife!

Bob,

there have been many excellent reports about Jaguars in Snow and Ice without
Traction control. I’m sure you will hear from others that snow and ice is no
big deal and on par with front wheel drive.

Traction control makes car go faster (or just go). This is not always in the
interests of saftey since the car doesn’t stop any quicker!

ABS is standard and has been for a long while.

I drove a Ford with traction control for two years. Indeed it was very good
in snow and Ice and wet roads. I did get stuck when the car grounded in the
snow and it still slid backwards off the driveway. In both situations I
would not have got into such positions without the traction control

Perhaps the biggest factor in selecting the Jaguar is it’s saftey record.
The thing is built like a tank and whatever (or whoever) causes a mishap,
you have excellent protection.
