Since the AC is obviously working as it should, Garry; one wonders, with the original AC amp disconnected/removed, ‘how’. Though looking this gift horse in the mouth is just idle curiosity…

Unfortunately I do not know enough about Series 2s or even my own car but I believe the amp has simply replaced by an after market unit as mentioned by MRCHB.
Looking further I found the a/c amplifier jammed up in the front of the console - you can see it in this pic and the plug we were talking about before. Does this look like the standard amplifier
or an aftermarket one as described by MRCHB earlier.
Cheers
Garry
Probably an aftermarket, Garry. likely a different type. Both the OEM and Australian replacement amp, which were direct plug in replacements, were discontinued long time ago. And notice the different wiring colours on the two plugs.
To what extent it uses the original AC hardware is uncertain. Time to worry about that when the system starts misbehaving…

Radio is in - and all working. On to the next task which is to sort the instrument lighting.
Thanks for all the input on both the radio wiring and A/C aspects - much appreciated.
Garry
I knew it would be somewhere in the console. Yes, this looks like the Australian made aftermarket amplifier I bought six years ago.
