[x-type] 2004 JAGUAR X FONT TRANSFER CASE

HI please advice on way or where to add oil to FRONT
transfer case, I recently replaced it without oil, so how
do we fill it up. thanks joe–

I believe the plug is under the battery, take the battery
out.

Search the x-type forum for adding oil to transfer case. The fill
plug is under the car on the drivers side of the unit. To fill
the unit, I believe you need to lift the drivers side of the car
20 inches off the ground, pull the plug, fill the unit with
special Ford Transfer Case oil. If memory has me right, you need
to add a specific quantity of oil to the unit. This can also be
found in the forum. Good luck.–

If you are talking about the actual ‘fill’ plug, and not the
drain plug, it is almost impossible to get to it. I have
changed the fluid in my Xnsfer case a couple of times. I
used to do it through the factory drain plug. It was very
messy and I would lose a lot of oil trying to get the plug
back in. I drilled a smaller hole and tapped it for 1/8’’
pipe threads, near the bottom front of the case. It is now
much easier and I hardly lose any oil at all when replacing
the plug. I use special BMW oil. I researched the web and
found that the Jaguar oil specified for it is not available
where I live. The BMW oil met those specs. It’s darn
expensive stuff. I use a hose barbed brass pipe plug and
some small rubber hose with a large syringe to fill it.–

As a point of information, the BMW oil IS the Jaguar oil! it is made by
Castrol and is the specified synthetic 75W140 oil for the Jaguar - I know
this because I ordered it from my Jaguar dealer under the Jaguar part
number: JLM 20771.
The 1 litre bottle label is labelled “Castrol Differential SAF-XJ” (!). It
is made in the EU and the text on the label on the back says: "Castrol
SAF-XJ is a fully synthetic final drive lubricant recommended for most
passenger car final drives. The product is specifically recommended by BMW
for use in limited slip rear differentials"

I have used this in the transfer cases of two manual shift X-Types.

NO, the fill plug under the battery is for the Transmission. The Transfer Case does not have a fill plug, as it (and the transmission also) are “factory sealed for life”, which, as we all know, is a big joke. The way to fill a transfer case was unfortunately best done before installing it, but when it’s in, you have to jack up the car as high as possible on left side (Use jackstands of course) and fill through the drain plug. It holds about 400mL of 75w-140 gear oil.
