[x-type] 2004 X-Type strange overheating

I have a 2004 Jaguar XType. The car keeps overheating. I had
the waterpump replaced. The mechanic discovered that the
thermostat was also broken, so he simply removed it, without
replacing it. It worked fine for a few days, then it
overheated again. I then had the water reservoir replaced,
since the pipe going into it was cracked. It worked fine for
a few days, then it over heated again! There is enough
coolant, and no leakage.
Some other odd things:

  • It overheat quite suddenly. The needle goes from the
middle to Red in an instant.
  • The car becomes sluggish when this happens.
    Any ideas? Thanks,–

You shouldn’t remove your thermostat. By repeatedly overheating
your engine you have probably seriously damaged it.–

First, you cannot simply remove a thermostat and expect the cooling system
to behave properly. You need a new mechanic - but not before you get this
one to 1) replace the thermostat (making sure it is OEM Jaguar and properly
installed) 2) ensure that the water pump he put in was a proper OEM pump and
that the impellers are not damaged in any way.
The X-Type does not normally overheat(this is, in fact, the first time I
have heard of overheating in an X-Type). But I once had a BMW that would
very often and unpredictably overheat; the problem was finally found to be a
thermostat incorrectly installed (yes, that is possible in that BMW). In
your case the lack of a thermostat is probably the cause of the problem. Get
the right thermostat put in, and find a new mechanic.

When you say it overheats is it obviously venting steam of forcing
coolant back into the resevoir? Is the lower radiator hose loose
and dropping coolant? If this is not happening you may have a
faulty temperature sending unit.

Also, when overheating is indicated on the gage, are the electric
fans running? If not you have a fan failure, at lower speeds not
enough air flow causes a temperature rise regardless of a
thermostat.

And yes, put the thermastat back in correctly.–

Richard: you make a good point that I actually forgot when responding to the
question: there were some known early failures of the fan control unit - so
yes, absolutely - making sure that the fans are running is very important.
There was a bad batch of fan controllers early on - earlier than 04, though

  • and the unit was subsequently redesigned; most or all of these defective
units would have been caught in the warranty period. Any of the earlier cars
(01-02) still using the original fan controllers probably don’t have
defective ones. Certainly both my car and my wife’s 02 cars have the
    original units which work perfectly.
But this is an issue not to be overlooked. Thanks for mentioning it.

Thanks, Gregory.

Remeber, even though these are ‘‘sophisticated’’ pieces of
engineering, they are just cars. One of my favorite overheating
problems was the result of a bubble. The coolant level looked fine
but a large bubble of air settled near the temperature unit causing
the gage to fluctuate (not a Jag). Even thermostats installed
upside down can work but the teperature range they open in will be
different.

In this case it may be a loose connection or broken wire and not
the module.

The original problem could be a blocked radiator which may be as
simple as a good flush and new coolant.

Has a solution been found?–

“Has a solution been found”? no idea - but I would like to know. It is
always frustrating when a question is asked and answers are given to have no
response from the questioners - often not even an acknowledgement that help
has been given, and very often no report as to the final outcome; this
reporting is the principal way of building a collective knowledge-base (the
XJ list has worked this way very efficiently for years and as a result it is
the best source of solutions for the Series I-III XJ “issues” anywhere on
the planet - much more accurate than answers given in a certain high profile
Jaguar magazine).
Perhaps the original questioner could tell us what has been found?

Shaun, have you found out what is causing the overheating?–
