[x-type] Battery replacement/ Radio reception. Help needed

Hello. I recently had to have my 2002 x-type towed, because the battery
completely died. Couldn’t jumpstart it at all. The dealer said that one of
the cells “shorted.” Is this problem familiar to anyone?

Also, when the new battery was installed, the radio reception seems to have
been adversely affected. I get a lot more static on the radio stations that
I normally listen to. I was wondering if something needs to be re-set in
the radio, or if they may have disconnected an antenna hook-up when they
replaced the battery. My stereo system is the “base” radio/tape player that
came with the 2002 x-type in the US. If anyone can advise me how I may be
able to restore the radio reception to the way it was, I would appreciate
it. I don’t want to have to go back to the dealership for something so
minor. Perhaps it needs to be replaced?

Thank you,

Brad Bennett

Hello Brad,
I haven’t had a battery failure on an X-type, but I have
known batteries to fail with one or more cells shorting
out. It is often caused by the battery overheating through
repeated and prolonged cranking of the engine. It could
also be that the battery just got to the end of its life.
The plates get thinner with use and eventually can buckle
and short out. 3 Years isn’t bad for a battery.
The radio reception problem sounds like it could be the
amplifier between the aerial and the radio. Does the
reception get much worse when you turn on the rear window
heater? I had mine replaced under warranty twice in 2
years. No particular reason could be found for them failing.

Glenn.–

Get your dealer to check the radio settings - I’m sure that there
are differences between UK and US settings, and they may have
reverted when power was lost. I’ve seen posts on either Jagtalk or
Roadfly about this, although they were a year or two ago.–
