[x-type] Excessive Black Smoke

Hi all, new here.

Have been looking to buy a 2ltr Diesel for some time now,
went to look at one last night, lovely motor but concerned
that on start up there was a puff of black smoke, took it
for a run and parked up expecting it to have cleared,
temperature was reading normal, touched the pedal a few
times and black smoke was still visible from the exhaust,
any ideas on what this could be would be greatly appreciated.–

Hi Bill

It is difficult to comment without further information on the car
including its age and miles on the clock.

However, the diesel cars I see that belch black smoke with our
company owned car drivers are generally those that have been
thrashed to death from new and from cold start ups. And they are
german car makes not Jaguar.

Personally I wouldn’t touch a car like that.

I have been running the 2.2 Diesel from new and after 18 months, it
has never displayed any black smoke at all.

But I have treated it very well and looked after it.–

Hi Craig, thanks for you reply.

The car was registered 10th October 2003 and it’s done 92000
miles, full Jaguar service History and had it’s last service
3000 miles ago.

Regards

Hi Bill

Hopefully with the extra details you have provided we should see
some comments from members with more knowledge of diesel engines
than the little that I have.

However regardless of that:

The car has averaged about 23,000 miles per year. Company car
perhaps? Multiple drivers perhaps?
90K miles on a well looked after diesel should present no need for
concern.

However what you cant be sure of is how the car has been driven
during the equivalent of 3 and a half times around planet Earth.

The general condition of the car should provide some clues as to
the care given by the previous owner(s). If it shows signs of wear
and tear inside or out, it may have had a very tough life so far.

It seems accepted that diesel engines do tend to consume more
engine oil than the petrol engines.

However those folks I referred to that have thrashed their diesel
engine (Audi and Mac) company owned cars from new, all have two
features to live with:

(1) Black smoke and plenty of it during acceleration.
(2) Heavy engine oil consumption requiring regular top ups.

It might be worth you having an independent mechanical inspection
including the engine to check the compression ratio and other key
mechanical aspects.

Alternatively, It might if the seller is willing, be worth paying a
fee to have a decent test drive in it covering some miles in a day
so that you can then check whether it has burnt oil that it
shouldnt.

An X-Type of that age with 90,000 miles on the clock will be a
tempting proposition, as it should be very keenly priced.

But it carries a degree of risk.

Personally, Ive had my fingers burnt buying seemingly good (non-
Jaguar) cars with that type of mileage on the clock. Only later
after purchasing, to discover worn out items that are costly to put
right.

Keep us updated on what you decide and how it goes.–

Hi,
Re excessive smoke.
My 2.0D has only done 20k, but has smoked since new under hard
acceleration(not idling).
Have heard several reports of this, regardless of age of car.
Apparantly a ‘software fix’ was introduced by Jaguar in 2006 to
sort this.Am due a service shortly so will see if this is sorted.–

Once again Craig thank you for you’re reply.

I got in touch with the seller and said I wasn’t interested
in the car, the asking price was at the top end of my budget
so I couldn’t afford for any major repairs straight off,
think I may have been a bit hasty now.

Been told it could be something to do with the EGR valve,
seemingly they get a build up of soot and can either be
cleaned and put back in or replaced but at a cost.

Was a shame really because the car was immaculate both
external and internal, just a couple of stone chips on the
bonnet, Champagne Leather interior that was
unmarked…oh well I shall keep looking, I’ve set my
heart on one and shan’t rest till I am the proud owner of one.

Thanks sharan, hope you get yours sorted.–

Hi Bill

Firstly I wouldnt be too disheartened about deciding to turn down
the purchase.

If in doubt at all it is better to turn it down.

And one great thing about the X-Type is that there are plenty out
there compared with other Jaguar models, so it will be just a
matter of time before another one comes up for sale. And there are
plenty of well looked after and immaculate models, even those a bit
older.

On this thing about black smoke and diesel engines, for those that
view it as normal regardless of mileage, then perhaps my X-Type and
that of Suggs is abnormal.

My wife last weekend borrowed a smoky Seat diesel 6 seater car and
checked the oil level before a 200-mile trip, and it was just below
maximum. They didnt even get to the end of their destination
before the oil warning light came on and they had to stop to put a
litre in it!

Yes I accept that diesel engines may puff some black smoke under
certain conditions even though mine does not appear to.

However, it is a question of deciding whether those emissions seem
excessive. If they do it could indicate a problem that might at
best need very frequent oil top ups which would annoy me big time,
and at worse, an expensive repair bill.

Out of interest, after the first 1000 miles from new, I had to put
half a litre of oil in my X-Type. After those first few miles, it
reached the first 10,000 service interval with only about a third
of a litre needed to keep it at the maximum level.–

Hi one and all , I run a 55 plate 2.2d Sport estate best car I have
ever owned, excellent performance and economy and comfort.I have
had none of the problems mentioned but a mate of mine bought the
same model after seeing mine when he retired, a year younger than
mine but its just been diagnosed as having a faulty EGR valve as
mentioned earlier. He has a friend in the service department who
has said that its a known fault of the 2.2 engine and the EGR valve
is being redesigned but currently the replacement isnt complete.
The same engine in the Ford Mondeo has similar problems but as well
as producing a cloud of soot occassionally my mates cars engine
warning light comes on. Once the cloud of soot has covered everyone
in the area the light will go out when the car is restarted.–

Hi
Just noticed this subject of black smoke, my 04 2.0 D Xtype smoked
when I put my foot hard down (also sparks from exhaust when flat
out) - to cure the problem the Jag dealer replaced the exhaust gate
valve and installed new software, it’s still OK but top end speed
has reduced to nearer the quoted figure.
I am left with one problem which has happened about 6 times this
year Glo plug dash light flashes and engine power is reduced, on
restart is OK - Jag dealer can’t find any error codes - Has anyone
got any ideas ???.–
