[x-type] Gearbox Fault

About 5 weeks ago I was comming home in a rain storm and when I
stopped at a red light, I got a gearbox fault. I limped home and
parked it in the garage, with full intention of heading to the
dealership the next day. The next morning when I started the X the
gearbox fault light was out and the vehicle shifted normally. I
blew it off, as a quirk. Several days of fair weather and no
gearbox fault, Then a week later it begain raining on my way home
from work and I got another gearbox fault. Again I limped home and
parked it in the garage. Next morning the gearbox fault was gone.
Since the vehicle was close to a 50K, I booked a time in for the
50K with the dealership. The dealership investigated the problem
and found that some sealent wasn’t sealing and the TCM was damp.
They replaced the sealant and the TCM (OUCH!) and returned the
vehicle. Life was good. The gearbox was behaving. Then a week later
a light rain shower passed as I was headed home and to my shock and
horror, I got another gearbox fault. The car was returned to the
dealership and they have now had it a week trying to determine what
the #%^& is going on. I spoke to them today and they are baffled.

Does anyone have any ideas?–

I had my gearbox ATF and filter replaced the other week by the
local rebuilder - after eventually deciding that doing nothing was
not an option, despite various experts telling me exactly that -
it’s sealed for life! When chatting to the service manager he
mentioned that they ‘‘had X Type boxes falling out of the sky on
them’’ - his words.
Hope that is not the case with yours.–

i have seen some x-types with water in the tcm. the water comes in
the hood release cable then drips on the module. the module is in
the lower left behind the trim by your left foot. the cable grommet
wasn’t tight enough around the cable.–

Yes that was the case and that has been repaired. The TCM was ‘‘bone
dry’’ when the gearbox fault occured. I checked as soon as I got
home. The problem is that something else has occured that, when the
road is wet, causes a gearbox fault. This is what has everyone
baffled.

I beginning to believe that the gearbox, itself, is the fault. At
55K I’d like to think that’s not the case but it’s beginning to
look that way and the wet road is just coincidental to the fault.–

My 2002 X-Type recently started displaying this Gearbox Fault
message. When the dealer ran the diagnostics, they determined that
a software update might fix it or a new transmission would be
required. The software didn’t take care of it so a new transmission
is on order. I’m wondering if others have had this sort of problem
at relatively low mileage. I bought the car with 24k miles on it 6
months ago and now it has just under 43k miles, so it’s not a high
mileage vehicle. Of course, here in Tennessee we do have mountains,
but I’d hope they don’t put too much of a strain on it. Any ideas
or comments about similar problems and solutions would be
appreciated.–

Sorry to say this may not be unusual. My Auto gearbox went at just
20,000 miles - just out of warantee as well. After a lot of
pressure from my dealer, Jaguar denied liability but agreed to a
goodwill reduction in the price of a replacement.–

I have a 2004 X Type 3.0, 27,500 miles. 2 days ago
experience ‘‘Gearbox Fault’’. going into Drive gave a jump and car
was in Limp Home Mode, pulled over to side of road, turned off,
restart and just fine. 2 days later driving along stopped at a
stoplight, engine idle sound changed and gearbox fault, engine
systems failure as well as DSC system failure all took turns in a
rotation on the dispoay panel. Freaked out, I was out of town and
am a girl, ‘‘limp home mode’’ again to side of road. Put into P,
turnd off, restart and good to go until I got home.

I am 2.5 hours from Gaudin Jaguar in Vegas. Does anyone know if I
am good to get there and what the issue is at such low mileage?–

I experienced the same thing, I figured that this happens when
there’s slow trafic (frequent moving and stopping) so what I did
was in when ever I go to a stop I shift to n . I know it seems

Isnt it always good practice to put an auto into ‘N’ when at a
standstill at traffic lights etc? I thought that it wasnt good for
the gearbox to keep it in ‘D’–

James:
Not true. Unless the engine idle speed is very high, it does not damage
the engine. Constant shifting to N at stoplights will unintended wear on
the automatic box shifter (this is unlike a manual transmission which
SHOULD be put in neutral, foot off the clutch while waiting).

I’m a new Jag owner and in no way a proffesional mechanic, but I
did have a similar problem with my daughters Honda Accord. There is
a transmission control unit that when faulty causes this kind of
problem. Hers was located under a metal cover on the passenger side
floorboard. Easy fix. Not sure where its located on the Jag but I’m
sure it can be located with a little help from the web. I checked
the price at the location where I bought hers and the one for the
Jag is $749.00. Much much more than the Hondas was. If you would
like the site I’d be happy to send it to you. Hope this helps.–

Hello Old Hyde,

I’m not sure if this helps but I had similar problems on my 2002
Jaguar X-type with Auto Transmission. I thought it was my
transmission but my mechanic told me it was the Air Flow Sensor
next to the air filter. After that, it was been running
beautifully. Better than ever. But I still have my fingers
crossed!

I hope this helps!–

Well yesterday I took out the Jag and after a bit of stop and go
went over a bump in the road and the car stuttered and the dreaded
Gearbox fault appeared as well as the yellow light on the dash and
the service engine light. The cruise not available showed up on
the message center as well. The car is in limp home mode and that
is all I can say.

Once I checked the codes I got a P1643 which came back a problem
with the connection to the TCM.

Has anyone seen a similar problem? I have to admit I am kinda
worried about what could be wrong. I had a similar problem back in
August and they just reprogrammed the computer and it did not rear
its ugly head for over 3000KMs.

Any help would be appreciated where to go from here!!!

THANX–

I have not had the exact same problem, but my tcm did act
up, they have decided it was older software and an update
seemed to help…I know this sounds funny, but try
inserting your key opposite of what you normally
do…(upside down)
it worked for me–

Hi.
I have just had the very same problem…
Drove to work no problems, got in the car to go home and
the ‘gearbox fault’ and ‘cruise not available’ in the message
center and the yellow service light on the dashboard. The car is in
limp home mode.
I didn’t go over any bumps, or anything.
How did you check the codes… and what is the TCM.
Have you got your problem resolved.
I’m just worried that this is going to be very costly.
Any help Will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You in advance.–

A TCM is a transmission Control Module.

They cost a large amount to of $$$ to replace. My total repair
bill was close to $1500.00 cdn.

I hope yours can be fixed with a reprogram. Mine was totally bad
and it was believed water was the problem. I find it hard to
believe a car with under 15000 miles would have such issues.–

What does ‘‘Gearbox Fault’’ mean? I tried switching over to manual
shift, but I kept my foot on the gas when I shifted. ‘‘Gearbox
Fault’’ appeared. When I parked, I shut the car off and turned it
back on. but the message never came back on. Now, when I turn the
car off, the gauges make a scratching noise before the dials drop.
Did I do something harmful to the transmission? The dealer said
they might need to reset it. Anyone else experience this before?–

i had that, goto dealer, it could be throttlebody, gearbox itself
or transmission. if its under warranty, they should cover any of
those parts, had all of those changed on my xtype awd 3.0 2003.

good luck!

PS: make sure you make them check those parts, it could be faulty
alternator as well, (if u ever have batt. check sign)

make sure they check those, they have codes from fails.

good luck :)–
