[x-type] Guages Inoperative - come back to life after restart

2002 X-Type 3.0L Auto 46,000KM LHD

The instrument guages did not come to life last night on my wife’s
car. The lighting was on, the radio and climate controls were OK,
but the speedometer, tachometer, temp and fuel guages all
registered ZERO whilst the car was driven. She stopped the car,
shut it off, restated and everything came back to life and has been
normal since. Has anyone else had this happen to them? What could
be causing this? A bad relay? Where should I begin looking for a
fault? Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks for your help.
