[x-type] help.... rattle rattle... squeak ... squeak... rattle

X TYPE 2.5 XS… 3,500 Miles new in February… suddenly a
squeak/rattle has got worse… appears to come from rear passenger
side … only at low speed on rough surface… have checked boot
and door trim … rear seats and belts … it is getting worse and
is driving me insane… … really peeved over 22000 pounds for a
car that sounds like a 10 year old Vauxhall chevette… any
body had similar issues with 2.5 year 05 onwards… ??–

The early ones had a rattle under the rear seat area - its from the
handbrake cable where it passes through a support bracket (there’s
one on either side). You can see it easily enough if you look
under the car by the rear door - try moving the cable up and down.
If there’s any movement then it will rattle, unless the bracket is
packed with really thick grease.

I thought that Jaguar had redesigned the bracket on later models -
my own 2001 car still has a slight rattle even though I’ve clamped
hosepipe round the cable & bracket.–

I’ve got a 2003 2.5 and this bracket is apparently the same.
Mine started squeaking loudly at about 28K miles. I packed
it with silicon grease and it dead quiet now.

In response to above thanks for the replies… will be taking
it back to the nearest dealer … just to see what they
say… but dont think that I should be greasing it … after
spending over 22k on a car the only thing I want to do is put
petrol in it… if I had wanted to grease cars I would have been
a mechanic… why dont they get the design issue fixed…

Thanks to all for the help.–

My 2.5 was bought new in June this year and now has just over 3000
miles on the clock. Noticed a slight rumble, rather than a
rattle, from the rear, not very loud but once I had noticed it the
noise was always there in the background. Took car to the dealer
who diagnosed the same old problem with the handbrake cable. A
quick fix with some grease and the noise has gone. If the bracket
was redesigned to stop the rattle it has not worked - or is it a
slightly different, more refined, noise now?–

Not sure how long the ‘‘grease’’ fix will work - on wet roads the
underside between front and back wheels gets a real pasting.

I’ve had bits of hosepipe clamped round mine for the last year to
stop the rattling but decided to remove them yesterday as the
annual MOT inspection is due. I took a closer look at the bracket
assembly. The bracket itself is steel, with a ‘‘C’’ shaped slot in
it. A ‘‘C’’ shaped plastic collar with a groove round its outside
circumference is fitted over the cable and then pushed into the
bracket - but it expands slightly once located inside the arms of
the bracket, which allows the cable to rattle. Packing it with
really thick grease stops the rattle - until it gets washed away.

Looking for a better fix I pulled the cable free of the bracket (it
pulls out sideways, away from the propshaft) and slipped a piece of
very thin soft plastic tubing over the cable to increase its
diameter a shade (a few turns of insulating tape would have worked
just as well). Then I slid the collar back into place and pushed
it all back into the bracket. It needed a bit of force to get it
back, since the cable was effectively a shade bigger and had opened
out the plastic collar a fraction, but once in place the cable was
gripped properly and there is no way it can rattle now.

I also spotted that on one side the plastic liner inside the rear
wheel arch was loose at one end - so that was another rattle
solved. Now, if only I can find out which rubber bush in the rear
suspension is creaking I might (after 3 years) have a reasonably
quiet car.–

Thanks for that information, I really appreciate it - when the
squeek returns I will take a copy of your reply to the dealer and
see if they will do a bit more than re-grease this time.–
