[x-type] How do you check the auto transmission fluid level?

2002 3.0L AWD Auto 65,000Km

I’ve changed the tranfer case and rear differential fluids as per
the recommendations on this and the Roadfly forums. I now want to
change the auto transmission fluid. I plan on using the Jaguar
fluid (just to be safe). I could just measure the amount that
drains out and replace the same amount, but how do I know if the
tranny had the correct amount to begin? I have read that there is a
temperature specific method for checking the fluid level but have
not found the proceedure documented on this forum. Would someone
please either send me the link or point me in the right direction
to find the methodology.

Thank you.

Hi gmalyk, The Jaguar regime for checking the auto transmission
level is quite strict and I considered it beyond normal ‘‘do it
yourself’’. I have changed my auto oil twice now with no problems.
As you say, how do you know if the oil level is correct before you
start. My 2.1L X-Type (2002) was 10 months old when I bought it.
So with the auto box still working perfectly at 52,000 miles, no
transmission noises at all and no leaks or oil weeps anywhere to be
seen, I have to assume that the original level was correct. I then
drained what I could, which is about 5 litres at a time, carefully
measured it and refilled with the correct grade of oil
(expensive). To get at the filler tube, which just has a rubber
bung at the top of it, you need to remove the battery. Also ensure
you identify the drain plug correctly. Good luck.

My local dealer stated the fluid is Synthetic, and the
transmission is considered by them a ‘‘sealed unit’’ with no
level check. I admittedly find this preposterous as nothing
will last forever. The fluid is hideously expensive as noted
below. They told me to forego the oil change as it should be
good for the life of the vehicle because it’s ‘sealed’… I
feel compelled to do it though because of all the bad press
I’ve heard about premature transmission failure, especially
in my model year (early 2002, or officially, 2001.5 according
to Jag).–

The JTIS specifies a 30k mile fluid change for Severe Duty. What
is ‘‘Severe Duty’’? Well it’s the way we all drive…cold starts,
stop and go, short trips, acceleration, etc. Changing the fluid is
just good maitenance practise.–

Anthony, I have checked my handbook and maintenance schedule and
there is no mention at all of changing the automatic transmission
oil, even under severe duty. Can you let me know where you saw
this please?
Thanks
