[x-type] Limp Home Mode!

Hi, can anyone advise me as to why my parents 2001 petrol 3.0, V6,
SE, x-type keeps going into ‘‘limp home mode’’. For the last two
years, every couple of months it will do this intermittently.
Sometimes twice a week, sometimes not for 6 months. The engine
light was not coming on when this was happening until only
recently. Nothing was coming up in the diagnostic test either. Jag
has recently changed the throttle pedal connection? but this hasn’t
changed anything. Now Jag are asking for 500 to try something else
(funnily enough they think they know what it is now the warranty
has expired!). Any suggestions?

Thanks.–

If the problem started under the warranty period you should be
covered.

I doubt it in your case, but if the engine light & ABS light come
on at the same time the problem is a corroded sensor ring on one of
the rear wheel outer CV joints. These slotted disks apparently
corrode & fall off & cannot be bought seperately from the outer CV
joint–

One thing which occasionally causes engine check problems is a poor
seal at the fuel filler cap. When you release it after a run, do
you hear a momentary hiss of air? If not, the seal may be leaking -
but first make sure that whoever has been filling it always
tightens the cap until it clicks several times.–

As well as the lights on the dash this would show up as a fault
code on the diagnostic check and when it happened on mine car
still ran OK (no limp home mode) but occasionally cut out when revs
were low enough and clutch temporarily depressed (ie changing down
coming to roundabout).–

Does the engine idle properly? If not, my x-type did the same thing
and it was the battery of all things. The battery had cracked and
was causing the engine check light to come on intermitently. Have
them check the battery for you.

Hi Buck,
I did notice this thread was a bit old but, What was the reason then, for the ‘roundabout’ approach problem?
I’m experiencing something of the same right now, with my son’s X-type 2.2 D; comes up to a roundabout, I shift down to reduce speed and boom; glowplug flashing and “limp-home” mode.

Were you able to fix it?

Regards,
Bard Thomas

You’ll need to read the codes to point you in the right direction. Most common problem I’ve had with the 2.2d is the egr valve. It’s a common problem on this and the fords using the same engine.
It’s fairly straightforward to swap it out but I’d get the code before throwing money away.
The turbo actuator is another common problem.
Post the codes and let’s see.

John
