[x-type] The younger Jaguar generation (was Sport/Normal mileage & wheel cleaning)

John,

Tinting can be more of a necessity then for show… I’m 25, my first Jag was
in England when I was in the service at 23 years of age, and have since left
and relocated back to California. With a Anthracite/Charcoal X300, I can’t
imagine not having tint for to block extra UVs, decrease exposure to the
interior, and privacy. Have you seen a car more cars in Phoenix with or
without tint or perhaps Melbourne, Australia?

I am a part of the crowd that also thinks it looks sharp on a XJ sedan,
especially an Anthracite one. The people I “run” with on a weekly/bi-weekly
basis from the LA Club all agree it looks appropriate on XJs. These are
people all between 40-70. Its personal taste, though many more in my age
group do have tinted windows, white/blue lights, spoilers that reach feet
above the rooflines, and modified exhausts just to name a few modifications.
Often you can feel vibrate us from hundreds of feet away before they pass
us, even if we’re indoors.

I hope your right that X-Types off lease will make it into younger hands and
spark off long term business for the marque. I do, however, enjoy a sense
of exclusivity driving an XJ sedan when I see X or S types on the road.
Then again, I’ve always been a sedan lover and the other Jags just don’t
please my senses like an XJ does. When those in my age group sit behind an
X-type, thats only their first taste and we can only hope some will graduate
up the Jag food chain and stay enamored like I am. Perhaps one day, we can
ask these potential owners if they know what an E-type or XK is or if they
ever heard of Le Mans and arrive at the correct answer…

To each their own. =)

Cheers,
Sunny

P.S. I always wave and usually get a response back from other owners, mostly
XJs, and a fair share of unsolicited “Ooohh baby’s” from non-Jag owners when
at stop lights or parking lots. Its earned me a few phone numbers thrown at
me, which isn’t a bad thing, when your 25 and single. Now, if I only had
the nerve and desire to call!----- Original Message -----

Good Day, fellow X-typers !

I’ve been really enjoying my new X-type - a few “thumbs up” from other
drivers,
and I still get a nice big smile on my face every time I get behind the
wheel. A
youngster here at work told me it would be really “PHAT” - Pretty Hot and
Tempting - if I tinted the windows. Nah - I don’t think so

(snip)

mark my words - In a few years when folks start turning in their leases,
you’re
going to see some very young persons in some very fast cars with lots of
ground
effects and big sub woofers and the likes w/ “SCCA” and “Barely Legal
Club”
stickers all over them. I actually think that might be a GOOD thing for
the
marque - long term. Young kids with money will end up being old people w/
money
if they play their card right. If they buy Jags at 18 years old and like
them,
some may say they’d be prone to stick with 'em as they “grow up”. Commence
discussion !

(snip)

Kind Regards !
John

True - Anthracite on black is a very hot combination. That same combo in
normally hot regions would make for an excellent sauna. My XJ40 is Dorchester
Gray, and that can get very warm in the sunlight. I don’t think I need tint on
the XJ or the X-type, though. Especially just because it makes the vehicle look
different. I think the very dark tint sometimes makes a vehicle look like the
occupants are hiding something. I suppose quite a few vehicles in the south or
west have tinted windows as a necessity. For aesthetics, as you say - to each
his own.

As for the other “modifications”, the thing w/ Jaguars is that folks respect
them for what they are - they don’t need to be lowered, nor do they need big
spoilers or tint or the likes… Definitely don’t need any of those “go fast”
stripes on it. At least that was the case w/ the old Saloons. Rarely does one
see an older Jag w/ body style modifications. They don’t need it. I just think
that in a few years the X-type will lend itself to being the first Jag “breed”
that becomes “cool” to customize, I don’t think I’ll like it when that happens,
and I know the purists will cringe.

I’ve got the XJ40 and a Phoenix Red X-type - both get enough attention w/o any
gizmos. And I really like your vehicle color scheme - The only thing I think I’d
like better than an Anthracite on Black X300 is an XJ-R of the same color… The
XJ-R 100 looks very intimidating. I could get used to that automobile…
Though I don’t believe the X-type is low on the food chain, as you say. I would
have to say that the X-type is not as “plush” as the XJ40 or X300s or 308s, but
it is very close, and the engineering has come a long, long way. I don’t know if
I’ll ever have the resources to be able to grab a new XJ, or even an “S” type
right off the lot, but the X-type I can do, and if there’s a Ford out there
that’s even close to the X-type, then I must be driving the wrong car. I’ve been
in or driven the “entry” BMWs and Lexus - To me, they’re VWs and Hondas w/
luxury badges on them. I can’t see paying an extra $10K for a badge. The X-type
is no Ford, though I’ll accept that the side profile has some Fordesque
qualities.

Anyway - there was a time when my car stereo was worth more than the vehicle
itself - very loud. Now I put in Sinatra and adjust the volume to a loud by
acceptable limit. I must be getting old… Though cranking up a little AC/DC
“Given the Dog a Bone” sometimes gets me some funny looks : - ) I think my
neighbors prefer not having to seismically brace their homes because I went out
and got one of those 60" sub woofers, though.

John

FWIW, I have the Anthracite on Dove combination. It looks pretty but it’s a
bit hard to keep the dove clean. I live in Tucson, AZ. I bought the hot
climate car cover through Jaguar. It is the same cover as used on the
S-types. I only use it when the car is clean (most of the time). It’s fit
stinks. Everytime there is a breeze of consequence it starts to blow off of
the X-type. When it is in place it keeps the car much cooler. It sure would
have been nice to have a cover specifically for the X-type that really fits.
