[x-type] thinking about buying an X-Type wagon (U.S.)

Hello fellow Jag Lovers, I am seriously considering the
purchase of an X-Type wagon, as a Winter car and the
‘‘go-fer’’ car, pick up parts etc. I have 3 other Jags, 2
hibernating, one under restoration, but I do want one
‘‘snow-cat’’.

What should I look for, trouble areas, wear and tear items,
known faults and other foibles.

Thanks, Bruce W.–

Hey Bruce -

I picked up an '06 wagon 2 months ago for similar reasons. 35000
miles, no real problems. It does have the whine at some speeds that
has been discussed but that didn’t start until the weather got
cold - didn’t show up up in the test drive. The other thing was
that when the dealer took it to get inspected, it needed brakes.
35K seems a bit early to me, but he did redo the brakes. That might
be something to keep an eye out for.

Also, I get a lot of ‘‘I didn’t know Jaguar made a station wagon!’’.
All-in-all, I’ve been happy with it so far. Good luck in your
search.

My '03 had about 45,000 miles on it when I bought it, and it had
worn brake pads. I’m assuming Jaguar decided to use a more
agressive brake pad compound to improve brake performance at the
expense of long life. I replaced the pads on all 4 wheels myself.
Getting the pistons pushed back into the calipers on the back
wheels was a major pain.–

Regarding brake pads for the future, you may want to consider
fitting ‘‘Akebono Euro Ceramic Brake Pads’’.
I fitted these to my '05 Jag Wagon. The response is better, no
brake fade as the Euros use copper strands instead of steel in the
compound. This alows for better thermal transfer and heat
dissipation and is less agressive on the rotors. Brake pad life is
also extended.
You will also eliminate that awful black crud build-up on the rims.
The ceramics are only a little more expensive, but well worth the
cost.–

I have put over 60,000 miles on my 2003 X and it’s been
excellent. The viscous AWD system works very well (it does
whine when very cold, but that goes away after awhile) and is
a Good Thing year’round; the car feels very well planted in
all conditions. Too bad you won’t be able find one with the
manual 5 speed, which is a joy. In a recent exchange with Mark
Gillies (well known auto writer), he said that the wagon is
the most attractive of the X models, and he’s got something
there. Assuming you find a good one, I think you’ll be
delighted with it. And hey! it ain’t just a ‘‘mule’’!–

I own a Lynx Eventer Shooting brake and have been interested in the X type wagon.
Given they weren’t imported into Australia there are only 4-5 in the country anyway a car that I missed out on last year came back on the market so I am the proud owner of a 3 litre V6 wagon/estate.
Originally UK delivered it has some interesting extras such as heated screen, heated seats, possibly automatic wipers and maybe other items really need to learn more about them.
The car was sold new in Herts march 2005.
The original radio has been replaced and looking at trying to get an original and an original fitment GPS system and parking sensor on rear bumper.
Love to make contact with anyone who really knows there X Estates
