[x-type] XJS regular needs advice on buying X Type Estate

Hi. I am an XJS owner from the other forum who is thinking
about buying and 04 X Type Estate AWD SE 3Ltr V6 petrol. Its
done just under 70,000 miles with a full service history. It
will come with full MOT and a three month parts and labour
guarantee. The colour is silver blue with cream leather
interior. It seems to be fully loaded but I know little
about these cars. The garage is asking 3,000 for it which
seems fair.
I really like the idea of the AWD and this car seems in
excellent condition although as yet I have not test driven
it. Is this a good car to have for a daily driver? I am used
to Mitsubishi economy and reliabilty! Is it the best engine
to have or is it too thirsty. How about reliability? Where
should I look for rot or leaks. What else should I look for?
Many thanks for any help or advice. Richard.–

Richard:
These are superb cars for daily use or for extended touring. I have an 05
AWD 3 litre and I love it. The X-Type is an extremely reliable (and much
underrated) car - the one item that should receive attention is the transfer
case: a fluid change (75W140 synthetic) would be beneficial and the
transmission fluid as well if it is an automatic. Otherwise, the normal
“service history” caveats apply. There are no chronic issues to worry
about - it will equal or surpass Mitsubishi reliability!
My wife is now in year 12 of daily use with her own manual-shift 2.5 X-Type
AWD. Problems? in that entire period, ONE repair: replacement of an 02
sensor. It runs like a new car.
Problems with my Estate (called a Sportwagon here)? NONE, not a single
thing. Can any Toyota, let alone Mitsubishi, do better than that?

Fuel consumption on the automatics is not as good, obviously, as on the
manual shifts but is is perfectly acceptable given the luxury and
performance (can’t even tell you what it is because it is not a concern).
These are wonderful highway cars.
The one you are looking at sounds beautiful in that colour combination and I
can tell you that here in Canada that car would fetch a far higher price; in
fact, there is a 2004 Estate, 3 litre AWD available at my local dealer for
$14,800. Now, does that put this one of yours in perspective?
Jaguar has moved on, far on from the XJS days. Modern Jaguars are as good or
better than anything on the road in terms of reliability. In terms of
beauty, comfort and luxury, well…, if you have to ask, you haven’t
experienced a Jaguar. You have and you will not be disappointed with the
X-Type. It has the same wood, leather, chrome and comfort that your XJS
gives, but with much better fit and finish and reliability.

Richard, a little late here, but my daily driver X type
has been the most problematic, high maintenance and
difficult Jaguar to work on. My 95 XJS AJ16 or 74 E type
have not given me nearly as many problems since they where
given to me 5 years ago as the X has given me in one year.
The X type is a fun car to drive and I love it to bits but
it can be very difficult to live with.–

I own a Lynx Eventer Shooting brake and have been interested in the X type wagon.
Given they weren’t imported into Australia there are only 4-5 in the country anyway a car that I missed out on last year came back on the market so I am the proud owner of a 3 litre V6 wagon/estate.
Originally UK delivered it has some interesting extras such as heated screen, heated seats, possibly automatic wipers and maybe other items really need to learn more about them.
The car was sold new in Herts UK march 2005.
The original radio has been replaced and looking at trying to get an original and an original fitment GPS system and parking sensor on rear bumper.
Love to make contact with anyone who really knows there X Estates

I echo Gregory word for word. I have had mine 9 months now and have driven it winter and summer with upmost reliability. It will start at - 30 C with no problem. As to fuel mileage; I’ve gotten over 30 mpg.

I just bought one with 170,000 miles on it and it runs fine and looks good. 2006 model. I have never seen another estate model.

Hi. My post re the X Type estate was in May of 2014. Thank you for all the replies but my request for info on the car no longer applies. It looked a lovely car but somebody beat me too it. I am very happy with my 95 XJS Celebration which is the only Jaguar I have. Best wishes. Richard.
