[x300] 1988 XJ8 Vanden Plas

We are interested in a 1988 XJ8 with 48000 miles. My brother has
this very same car so I asked him about it. He bought his new and
had to replace the motor at 40000 miles. He said this is common on
these cars. Is this true? If so what years and models should I look
for. The car we are looking at is on E bay and goes off bid this
evening. Thanks for your input.–

Its a question of possible excessive wear on the nikasil lined bores, in the
xj8’s pre 2000. Probably not a good idea to buy without having a blow by
test.

Check the archives and read the articles on the web site about Nikasil. They
should answer your questions. I would not hesitate to buy an XJ8 with
Nikasil bores after having the dealer perform a blow-by test.

Nikasil will outlast steel provided the conditions are right. Short trips
(incomplete warm-ups), long oil change intervals, and high-sulfur fuel
combine to kill the engines. Avoiding that, you’ll have a superior
technology at a reduced price.

Make sure you factor in the cost of an upper timing chain tensioner
replacement (approx. $1000) if the PO can’t offer proof that it has been
done.
