[x300] 1996 XJ12 problems diagnosis?

I just got a call from the nearest Jaguar dealer, to whom I brought my 1996
XJ12, 65,800 miles. I wanted him to tell me what it would cost to fix the
following problems:

  1. At idle the engine (after warm up) oscillates between 550 and 650 rpms
almost continuously. I also think the rpms at idle should be around 700 to
  2. After start-up the word airbag appears and stays on until the engine is
shut down. The SRS red light comes on at the same time. This happens very
often but not all the time.
  3. On cold start a noisy clatter can be heard inside the car coming from the
floor boards, but the same noise can also be heard outside towards the rear,
under the car. This noise disappears almost completely when the engine has
    warmed up.

Now for the Jaguar dealer remedies:

  1. Requires new TPS - $ 400 installed.
  2. Requires new Cassette Reel in the steering wheel - $ 590 installed.
  3. Requires replacement of fuel lines, both of them no less - $ 560
    installed.

They put this girl on the phone to you to give me the above information, but
when I started asking questions, like why can’t they secure the fuel lines
rather than replace them, you get this blank stare (if you can get that over
the phone).

I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who would like to comment
on these (expensive?) fixes. Will they work ?
Thanks in advance
JON

John,

The throttle position sensor (and possibly the fuel lines) are covered under
the extended Federal Basic and Performance Emission Warranty (14 years from
date of service or 150k miles, whichever comes first).

Your dealer should know this … as it is called “S-700 Emission
Enchancement Program and Service Campaign 1995 & 1996 Jaguar XJ12”.

If the component has anything to do with the basic emission warranty … it
is covered free of charge to you. Your warranty booklet with the Owners
Manual describes all covered components.

By the way, doesn’t sound like a TPS to me. Sounds more like one of the
Idle Speed Adjust Motors (V-12 has two) is malfunctioning. By the way, your
idle speed should be 650 rpm (+/- 25 rpm) with zero hunting.

Either way, its highly probable the idle malfunction is related to engine
management … all engine management components are fully covered.

Can’t speak to the SRS problems … have never investigated this control
system. The noisy fuel lines sound like a joke! My bet is a loose heat
shield on one of the catalytic converters.

Good Luck with the dealer … but you are “armed” now.

I don’t know about the rest, but that “noisy fuel line” must be some sort of
sick joke. There are several brackets that run under teh car that hold the
fuel lines in place. Those could have broke, or perhaps a heat shild of
exhaust leak.

Main dealers can often be “black box” repairers. If something acts strangely, they replace the whole assembly. This, of course [usually] fixes the problem. My dealer wanted to replace the power steering pump because it was leaking. The warranty company looked at it, and pointed out that it just required a hose clip to be tightened! Replacing the pump would have fixed it because they would have undone that union, and redone it on the new pump…

Replacing the whole fuel line would probably fix the noise because they’d reattach it properly. Scarcely the correct approach, though.

Adrian
