[x300] 1997 XJR (1 of 318 ever made?) ending on ebay for 4k no reserv

This auction seems to good to be true…I posted about it a
week ago. Worth bidding on?

Frankly, I have a funny feeling about this car. Its in decent shape but
hardly excellent and shows no pride of ownership, IMHO. Add to that the
seller’s low feedback score and identity change. But…the price, so far,
is very low. Tough call.

While buying a used car is no time to be emotional I do believe in gut
feelings. When the “right” car comes along you know it and will have no
reservations.

I don’t think too good to be true, it’s hard to tell from the
pictures but looks good to me, a perfect example of why there’s no
market for used Jag’s. Blue book values 9-10K is bad enough but
this dummy puts it up no reserve, then 16 bids later, 16…it’s a
whopping $4751. Amazing… I just wish it was a 6.0 XJS Coupe,
even though I really can’t afford it and no place to put it, I’d be
on my way there with a trailer and a check.
The Seller has changed ID 5 times, so I think it’s less a warning
sign than if she’d done it once. Maybe shady but probably just a
typical woman and can’t make up her mind. Her 106 feedbacks go back
to 01, it’s not perfect but not really awful. You should read
through them to see for yourself whether you’d want to do business
with her.
The car allegedly ‘‘meticulously’’ dealer maintained, there should be
receipts to prove it, it has the AJ16 engine, no Nikosil problems,
4 new Z rated tires ($5-600. value), I checked at my dealer a few
years ago on the half wood half leather steering wheel for my XJS
and the dealer cost was 700. and now I’m told they’re NLA., new
brakes again $5-600 value at least. If I wanted an XJR I’d jump on
it contingent on reciepts or other proof of condition, and an
inspection.

My advice on buying any car at a distance is to e-mail the seller and get
their agreement to allow you to visit the car with cash in hand at the end
of the auction if you win. Inspect carefully, take a test drive, call a
dealer in the area and make an appointment for an inspection. If the car is
as advertised, make the deal and drive it home, even if it’s across the
country.

If they don’t reply, you can draw your own conclusions.

It looks like a great deal, but expect the price to jump to over $6000 at
the end.

If it was closer, I’d bid on it.

I’d feel better about one of these two, personally…

Only one problem, Doug. Neither will make reserve. I’ve become convinced
that dealers use eBay to prospect, not to sell. Check the closed auctions,
and you’ll find that almost none of the dealer Jaguars sell through eBay.
They may contact you after the auction is over and try to get some more
money out of you or try to upsell you to another car, but the advertised car
at the final bid isn’t going to happen. I wouldn’t even bother to bid on a
dealer car.

There were a couple of wholesalers in Texas who moved a bunch of used
Jaguars. I don’t remember their exact names, but I bet if you Google them
you could find them. I don’t recall anyone who dealt with them having a bad
experience. If anyone has, contact James off-list.

You are right. It ended at $6,600. Seems fair as auction with new
tires and brakes. The winner might be a private used car dealer.–
