[x300] 1998 XJ8 Tensioner rattle? 100K on the clock

Hi all,

I changed the upper tensioners on my XJ8 yesterday, 3rd gen
models. I changed them because there was a rattle when I
first started the car, as soon as it warmed up the noise
stopped.

I didn’t changed the chains, and now the noise is still
there when the engine is cold. Anything up to 2000 revs and
there is a rattle/chattering noise until the engine heats up
to running temp. Any suggestions out there?

Mark.–

Either your tensioner are note tensioning or the chain is way to stretched.

This year I went through changing the secondary tensioners, rattle
was still there, changed the chains and the primary tensioners,
rattle still there on start up and now rattles till it warms up,
in the process of getting the VVT’'s as I am told that is the only
thing that will cause the rattle, hope so , it has cost me a
pretty penny so far,

Dave

Hi I’ve recently replaced the whole lot, primary, secondary guides
and chains on my XJ8, did the job myself. I had read about this
problem a lot. Mine doesn’t rattle and is much quieter than the
original plastic. I also have the latest metal tensioners straight
from the local Jaguar dealer. One thing I did do was to shorten the
bolts which mount the tensioners. I read that they are too long for
the metal tensioners and when trying them in the car you could
easily think it was the correct length, but on close examination
the mounting flanges between the two tensioners are of different
thickness. I therefore machined the bolts shorter to account for
the metal tensioners having a thinner flange and was able to fit
and torque them up properly. The local dealer had never heard of
this ‘problem’ so I wonder if some cars are built up with the bolts
being slightly too long allowing for some flexing? Maybe I’m on the
wrong track but my vehicle has no rattle.–

Your local dealer is remiss and should have had a look at his on-line
spare-parts-catalogue.

With the new metal upper-tensioners Jaguar also introduced compatable
shorter-bolts for the excat reason you describe. Certainly shortening
your originals works OK, but the new bolts are only a few cents each so
best to buy them with the new tensioners.
