[x300] 2000 XJ8 code P0455 is not the gas cap

I have a 2000 XJ8 and the check engine light came on 2 weeks
ago. I retrieved the code and got P0455, large evap leak. I
purchased a new cap and thought it had fixed the problem. A
day later, the light came back on so I did more reading and
thought I found a pine hole in the metal pipe that goes
between the 2 evap cannisters in front of the rear end. I
fixed it and again a day later, I have the same code. Now I
don’t know where or what to do. Is there a way to test the
evapp valve at the right cannister? Any help would be
greatly appreciate as I have to go to smog station soon.–

I just took the purge valve out of the car. I can blow and
suck freely. When I apply power to it, nothing changed. I
contacted the 2 dealers and it is a special order. What
surprised me is that they never sold one. Doe any one knows
how it is functioning?–

I would suspect the CCV (Canister Close Valve) before the purge
valve. I have replaced several on XJ8 and XK8 cars. They are
normally open and close with power applied (That is how the system
tests itself for pressure change) Also check the 'O’rings on the
plastic fittings into the Carbon Canisters and the Canisters
themselves (Plastic seams cracked). The proper way to check the
EVAP system is called a ‘SMOKE TEST’. It is a cold smoke generator
under low pressure applied to the system with the CCV closed. bob–

Bob, Thank you for the reply. The valve that I called the
purge valve is probably the valve you were referring to. It
is located behind the right cannister and goes to a
breather(filter) it was always open and when power was
applied, it didn’t close. I sprayed wd40 inside and tapped
it and now when power is applied, the valve shuts off. I
think my problem is fixed. Thank you.–

Hi @Lemmerdeur @motorcarman

I am getting a small EVAP leak. The purge valve is near the top firewall right and the CCV is underneath?

I’m confused on what L was referring to when he said “it didnt’ close” and he sprayed WD40 inside.

Correct.
The CCV (Canister Close Valve) is only fitted on North American cars

15 years later, you think I remember???
