All of them. I suppose “wear out” might be a stretch. The ride becomes
a might less cushy and there is audible signs when they reach, let’s
say, a worn state.
I would think that at 10 years or 100K miles one would think about a
whole suspension rebuild. I’m in the consideration stage at present.

cars that have some things that wear out over time. The clocks stop
working, the headliner sags, the sunroof gets out of alignment, the
paint goes bad, the inside rear view mirror leaks, the steering reach
motor cable breaks and the suspension bushings get worn out.

Hi Edd,
A '95 to '97 X300 is the car for you, mine is a 3.2 Sport, I
couldn’t find an equivalent 4.0 whilst I was looking (over a
year!) and couldn’t/didn’t want to lash out for a XJR. The
3.2 is great, not quite as quick but no slouch for a big car
and gives me a mixed 50/50 Urban average of 24 mpg, measured
over the last 1200 miles.
I’ve had 34 mpg on a 400 mile motorway run admittedly at 65
to 75 mph on cruise using a very light foot, but still get
about 26 to 28 when I push it close to the +/- ton!
Im in the market for buying a used XJ. From the research I
have done so far it seems that post 1994 is what I should be
looking at. However I have a limited budget so it will be
not much newer than that.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could advise me on the
main pros and cons of the 3.2 and the 4.0 autos. Any help

What am I doing wrong? On a slight down grade I am excited
to see 23 mpg at 65 mph. My X300 couldn’t fall off a cliff
and reach 35 mpg. My old XJ40 was pushing it to hit an
occasional 22 mpg, all according to the built-in meter with
the odometer.–

Hi, Thanks for the responses. You all put very good
arguments forward for both engines. My old Honda Prelude
auto used to realisticly get 20mpg. I had 32 out of it on
the motorway though.
I guess the only way Im going to decide is to have a look at
one of each. In my mind I had the 4.0, but I guess that is
just the child in me saying ‘‘bigger is better.’’
A full suspension rebuild at 100k? Crikey, that sounds
expensive. Surely a car of this caliber is designed to last
more than 100k?
Are you in the UK? If not, the Queen allows a bigger gallon over there.
If so, I got no clue.

I don’t know how on earth you guys get 25+ mpg. I just
replaced the old (possibly original 112,000 miles) air
filter, and hoping some improvement from the 18.5 mpg that
I’ve gotten.–
1989 xj40 (sold), but I’ve got an 1997 Xj6 L instead.

Just a question, if you’re going to stick around, do we ever get to know
your name? It’s just weird to call someone Tophat.
You can get higher fuel mileage if you buy your fuel in the UK ;-P>

Reckon I shall be lucky to get as much as 18mpg (UK) - all
narrow roads, short journeys and steep hills. Great to
drive though.

I can do almost exactly that with my 4 litre, I’ve averaged 35 mpg in
highway cruising and similar city mileage.
