[x300] A-Pillar tweeters X300

Replaced my headliner yesterday. Later I’ll post my trials and
tribulations. Came across something that flummoxed me, though…

On removing the A-pillar trim the tweeter speakers simply fell out
of place. Odd.

The speaker grill is installed into the A-pillar trim and forms a
housing for the tweeters to drop into. The ‘‘housing’’ has small peg-
like protrusions which correspond to indentations in the speakers,
allowing the speaker to drop into the housing. Once dropped the
speaker is free to rotate in the housing.

I was expecting to turn the speaker and feel it lock into
position…along the lines of a ‘‘quarter turn’’ fastener
or ‘‘twist lock’’ bulb. However, I could find no method to secure the
speaker. It just sits loosely in the housing.

Is this right? Surely Am I missing something? I looked and
looked…maybe I was too frazzled from headliner woes to see the
obvious?

In the end I used a couple drops of glue to hold them in place. A
bonus was fewer rattles…and you guys know how sensitive I am to
rattles

Cheers

In reply to a message from Doug Dwyer sent Mon 24 Oct 2011:

Hello Doug,

A couple of years ago I replaced the A-pillar tweeters in my
XJR because one of the originals had failed. Since I
couldn’t (at the time) easily find the original items, I
used a pair of Pioneer TS-110’s instead. I picked these
since I figured they would fit into the grilles in the trim
panels.

IIRC, when one pulls the A-pillar trims off, the tweeters
should not fall out unless something is broken. The
tweeters fit into a black plastic mount, using a
twist-to-fit arrangement as you surmised. The mount is then
plastic-welded to the A-pillar trim. Unless the mount
itself is broken the tweeters can’t fall out. They could
rattle, I guess, but not come completely loose.

When I fitted the Pioneers I had to remove (i.e. break off)
the mount from the A-pillar trim and devise a different
mounting method. I have some pictures of this but not on
the computer I’m using right now. I can post them if there
is interest.

The headliner replacement is a bit of a hassle but hopefully
you’re happy with the result? I did mine over the summer
and I was pleased with the outcome.

Feel free to email with questions, etc.

Sincerely,

JSH–

Thanks for the reply.

Good to know I was on the right track with “twist” thing. In my case, since
there’s no “lock” after the “twist”, I’m thinking that someone was in there
before me and somehow broke something…although I didn’t see anything that
looked broken. Well, they’re glued in place now :-).

I’ll post my headliner story under a new topic
