[x300] Aircon expansion valve

Hi, I hope someone can help. Has anyone ever changed the aircon
expansion valve which is situated on the dashboard side of the
bulkhead?

My local aircon specialist says that he thinks it is blocked and
that they will have to remove the dash to get at it, whereas my
local independant Jag specialist was of the opinion that the X300
doesn’t have one?!?!?

I can feel what I think is the expansion valve high up under the
dash, surrounded by foam. Am I correct and is there an easy way of
removing it? I don’t really want to leave the car at the garage and
leave them with an open cheque to rip the dash out.

Any advice would be much appreciated,

The x300 ROM makes reference to the expansion valve, but it doesn’t say
where it is nor how to remove it (it doesn’t say how to replace anything on
the a/c system). The parts manual doesn’t list an expansion valve. Perhaps
it is part of another component?-----Original Message-----

Dan,
I have a 95MY and the expansion valve is attached to the evap
coil according to my local dealer.

I too experinced what could be discribed as a blockage.

Believe it or not but I "tapped" on the metal block/bolt that

attaches the hoses on the engine compartment side and the system started
working again. I believe it may be prone to sticking since it has
always acted up since I’ve had my car. In the last 2 months I had to do
one other tap and as we speak it was acting up yesterday.

With that said the system also has some other items that can

cause problems. Try to extract the code from the system to make sure
there aren’t any other faults and clear them. This activity is in the
only X300 manual. The 23 fault code indicates a low pressure but it can
set fro other reason so a good pressure check needs to be done on the
system also. Be sure to use the correct gauges and becareful of high
pressures.

The system is also sensitive to the gas charge. The correct

amount has to be in the system for it to function optimally. Again this
isn’t a real easy job but can be done with the right equipment.

Back to the expansion valve I have done some research on it and

I found that the valve is available for a reasonable price (about $50)
but I’m sure it would have to welded on to the evap coil. The Jag part
valve and evap is to the tune of $700. You would have to access it from
the inside the car which I’m sure isn’t an easy job.

I believe the valve is what the hoses connect/bolt into from the

engine side. Most system are typical of that.

Since I have most my own equipment if it acts up to the point it

would not reset after a tap I will probably remove the hoses at the bulk
head and check for plugging or corrosion before going after the change
out. I would also try to replace the valve only unless I would find
another problem that warrants change out the evap also.
Keep us update on what you find.

I didn't do the search again but I believe this is a site the

valve can be sourced from.

Good luck and keep the list informed.
