I have an a problem which occurs infrequently but is very
irritating. My car is a 99 xj8 vdp. Once I insert the
key and turn it to start the security system shuts down
all electrics except for a led on the shifter console.
Normally the car starts without issue. This has happened
to me 4 times in the last year. The last 2 within the
last 2 weeks. I’m not sure what clears it but within 15
or less the car can started. I’m not sure what event
restores power but I am concerned I will get stranded and
I won’t be able to start it.
I have searched the archives and I saw someone had a
similar situation but there was no explanation on what
the problem is.
I have tried to get information from the local dealer,
but they are not much help. The closest piece of
information I have from them is there is an exciter ring
at the ignition switch that reads that the key is the
correct key. If it doesn’t read the key correctly it
shuts down the electrical system. I have tried multiple
keys and still no response.
Does anyone know if this is accurate information and how
hard it is to change this at the ignition switch? Or is
there another solution to my problem? Any help will be
greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
