[x300] Boot Nameplates

The two nameplates on my 2–1 4L XJ8 are discolouring (it
looks as if moisture has penetrated the laminations over the
wording). Are replacements available and how are they fixed
on?
It would be nice to replace them as they make the back look
scruffy at the moment.–

Hi there,

I have changed the boot badges on both of my cars in the last 6 months.
They are readily available on Ebay and are fairly straight forward to change.
If you run a bit of heavy guage fishing wire behind them they will come off.
The lock side is more awkward as it has locating pins (4 of) around the keyhole.
The other side badge is flat. It will be a ten minute job to get them off but another 45 mins to prepare for the new ones. Each Side!
Some have suggested using a hair dryer to soften the 3M tape. I found lighter fluid and elbow grease the best.
You will find new ones on Ebay so don’t go for second hand. They will probably look just like your existing ones.
Good luck and I hope this helps,

Dom.–

Yes Dom, a quick inhalation of the lighter fluid makes everything
seem ok but, I didn’t know tht elbow grease had the same effect:-)

Jim,

The climate in Basingstoke must be pretty bad if it’s ruined your
badges in such a short time. When you get the replacements, put
some clear varnish on them before fitting, that should help them
last longer.–

Cheers chaps - but the link points to a site which doesn’t
have an XJ8 badge so it looks like Ebay for me!
And I know now how they are fitted.–

Jim,

Don’t ell Neil his link didn’t work! It took him 3 attempts to post it!
He must have been sharing a tin of lighter fuel with Gary!
