[x300] Does the XJ8 stall on the highway?

I’m thinking of getting another used jag to play around with,
specifically a 1999 XJ L. So far I’ve read that due to the throttle
body or tensioner chain, the car will stall on the highway i.e.
it’s a death trap. see e.g.

Back in my XJ40 days, about 1997/98 I had colleague who had
an XJ (can’t remember whether it was a X300 or X308, but
probably the latter as it was his company car) and that gave
out on him a number of times at 70+ mph on the M25 causing a
very squeaky bum!

Again I can’t remember whether he changed the car or if it
was fixed. I think there was a re flash done on the ECM or
it may have been the TB change or both and of course
tensioners were also an issue if they did throw a chain, but
it was fixed as most X308 owners will testify.–

As Neil said, there was a problem with some throttle bodies.
Jaguar issued a Service Action ans 97/98 cars had the throttle body
replaced, 99’s had a reflash. Ask the seller or, check with a
dealership whether this has been done.–

Whoa ! It’s a good thing I never read these reviews before I
bought my X308. Even being a long-time Jaguar owner, it’s pretty
scary reading what these folks are saying. I guess it’s the '98s
and '99s that had the throttle body issue and I would think by now
they would be pretty much straightened out, but I would still want
to see some record of throttle body work. Then there’s the cam
chain tensioners and water pump. I suppose that might sound
discouraging to some (normal) people, but once you get those sorted
out …–
