[x300] Donations

I am at a loss as to what is considered a reasonable donation. I
donate, but, I am guessing what amount is right.

I know ‘‘any amount’’ is OK. Maybe there is an average amount members
donate.

I have never see a suggested donation amount. Did I miss something?–

David, any amount IS good for the forum. Five, ten, twenty,
fifty bucks.

A good rule of thumb, though, is that if you are willing to
donate, make one larger donation instead of several small
ones. PayPal does take a real bite out of small
transactions, which amounts to a larger percentage.–

Dave,

There’s 2 ways of looking at it;

  1. Give what you can afford.

  2. If you have received information, from the forum, that has saved
you a repair bill then, I’d say 20% of what you’ve saved would be
very much appreciated by the board.

Hold on, IIRC, you’re an ex shop owner aren’t you? If so, you
probably wouldn’t face hefty repair bills if, you do all the work
yourself. Perhaps method no 1 is the way you should go:-)
Whatever you donate is better than nothing.–

Andy and Gary,

You both have got good ideas. The 20% rule is great. And the larger
rather than smaller amounts a good suggestion from Andy. He is
right, PayPal is a killer on small donations.

Yes, I am a retired shop owner…but I am also old and lazy. I
use a local shop for most of my service items. Since I gave this
shop my customer list, I get parts at cost (so they say) and they
rarely charge me labor.

The reason I asked the question was I felt what I was donating was
too low for the service I get from the sight. But I did not want to
give more with out knowing what you folks do. Thanks.–

David,

Since I handle the manual donations when someone donates from one e-mail and
is registered with another, I can tell you that we’ve had donations as high
as $250. They are much appreciated.

I’d love 20% rule. Given that Jag-Lovers is poised to cross the 60,000
member mark in the next couple weeks, if each saved a measly average of $100
per year, we’d have saved members $6,000,000 dollars in repairs. (Maybe we
should do a McDonalds thing and have a dollars saved – as opposed to
burgers sold – counter on the home page. ;->) If people donated 20%, we’d
have a cool $1.2 million per annum. We obviously don’t need that much, but
where the numbers fall apart is in the percent who have donated. Right now
we have 2355 out of 59,294 registered members. That’s just a hair under 4%.
Rather than a few people giving more, I’d like to see a lot more people
giving and helping to keep us on-line. Of course we wouldn’t argue if a lot
more people each gave a lot more.

Everyone who has commented about small donations is correct. We don’t see
much from a $5 donation. $10 is a little better. $20 is urged as a minimum
on the donation page. “Please donate if you feel able - with your help, we
will go on to provide even better facilities. We will not divulge the amount
of your donations. We’d also appreciate a minimum donation of $20 if
possible - online processing and transfer fees eat up a disproportionate
amount of the donation for smaller amounts. Thanks!”

While we frequently receive donations of $100+, most are in the $20-50
range.

On the donation page it states, “All donations will be used to help pay
Jag-lovers’ running costs - including administration costs, hosting fees,
bandwidth (lots!) and location charges (these alone cost about $35 per day)
plus equipment maintenance/upgrade, software maintenance and enhancement and
other operational and business costs incurred in supporting yourself and our
59,294 Members worldwide. In return, you’ll gain the satisfaction of having
helped us maintain and improve our services for the benefit of yourself and
the entire online Jaguar cars community.”

Mark, After reading your reply, and that of the others. I feel
anyone driving a Jaguar, and using this sight on a regular basis,
can afford 50 bucks. That’s not even a tank of gas in my x300 or 10
Starbucks Mocha Java Freezes. Yummm!

I think your joking idea of a ‘‘savings meter’’ is spot on. I do not
know how you could make it accurate as to real savings vs a clown
posting a spoof number. But if you geeky types can figure out how
to keep it accurate, I think it would be a unique idea. Maybe one
could enter their savings at the time they make a ‘‘minimum’’
donation. That might keep the jokers out.

I wonder how many Jags are on the road today, and not in some rust
pile because of this sight?–

Why the policy of no revenue from online ads? Maybe JL thinks it
would prejudice the impartiality of the site. If JKL wants to take
ads one day, I know someone who would like to discuss acting as ad
sales agency.

Ant,

Ads have been discussed among the admins on several occasions. Your
conjecture is one reason we’ve avoided them. If someone had a bad experience
with a vendor and we have an ad pop up for them, that might prompt some
vendor bashing. It would also give Jag-lovers a bit of guilt by association.

People get bombarded with enough ads on websites, even the paid ones. Try
searching for an answer to a simple computer question see the ads plastered
all over the pages that come up. We checked with the members (quite a while
ago, now) and no ads was their preference, so we’ve stuck with it ever
since.
