[x300] Failing LCD clock display and warranty extension

Dear All,

Reading the X300 list for over a year now, it seems that
there isn’t a single early X300 which did not have the clock
fainted LCD display problem.

For later models, it is unclear it this was addressed by
Jaguar or if it just a matter of time

To the extent that this is such a common if not universal
failure, it seems to fall in the category of ‘‘latent
defects’’ caused by a faulty design, and therefore deserves a
warranty extension by Jaguar.

Is anyone aware of any previous discussion on this matter ?

Holy cow! You’re taking about cars that are at the very least 8 years old
now. I don’t know when they phased out the LCD clock but it certainly was
at the latest during the 1998 MY when they redesigned the interior. When
had the LCD clock been phased out? I know that this is a problem with the
connections but you can’t expect things to last forever.

I’ve heard the call to arms for exhaust manifolds, nikasil liners,
transmissions and some other big ticket items but I can’t remember any for a
clock.

Just my 2 cents.

My '97 has the typical now you see it, now you don’t
display - funny how I never used to get the XJ40
display play me up! I suspect someone will write in
telling me that they’re the same, but I’ve never had a
problem until I bought this model.

I don’t consider this to be a show stopper anyway, as
most half-decent Hi-Fi has the option for a digital
clock display (some even with the CD title / track
data incorporated) so what if the LCD is bushed?

Personally, I’d rather the computer give me accurate
data on fuel usage etc, but that’s just plain dumb.

Yea, it does seem if you are going to distribute torches and gather the
villagers for a Pep Rally to storm the vaunted castles of motordom you ought
to up the ante to more than a finicky clock. Hell, everyone knows clocks
don’t keep time in cars. That’s what a Timex is for (or a Rolex for some of
you). I’ll join your Tensioner, Thermostat & Transmission brigade though
(have to be alliterative, you know). Have you chosen suitable rebel
attire… T-shirts, trendy bandanas and the like? I do refuse to be seen in
a “Gimme-cap” placed awkwardly bill-to-back on my head unless we are
seriously going to don a face mask and catch a baseball game. Really,
underclass emulation is mutually exclusive to the jaguar experience.

And I expect the ashtrays are full too. Jaguar obviously didn’t
make them large enough.

Class action lawsuit, anyone?–
