[x300] Faulty fob?

Hi, I’m wondering whether I need a new fob. When I bought my XJ
Sport the fob battery was dead.

Having replaced the battery the red/green lights on the fob work
when the buttons are pressed but does this necessarily mean it’s
working?

When I try the valet switch method to re-program it, the car doesnt
seem to receive the signal. I’ve also tried another method I read
about, which was to unlock with the key then press either fob
button 3 times.

This leaves me with a few questions:

Should I just buy another, assuming the problem can only be with
the fob, not the car or my attempts to re-program?

Where do I get one? The original XJ ones on eBay go for 40 upwards
but the newer ones from X/S-types are half that. Would these work?

Thanks in advance.–

O.K., what year is your car, and what type of fob do you
have? If it’s the little egg shaped one used from '95 -
'97, it should have the frequency printed on the batter door
(either 315 MHz or 433 MHz for those models). I assume
other models have the frequency listed as well. What
frequency is yours?

The different model fobs are generally NOT interchangeable.
In fact, even similar model fobs are NOT interchageable
unless the frequencies match.

Finally, are you sure you tried the repogramming correctly?
I know on my '97, it does NOT work if you turn the ingition
key two clicks forward. It drove me crazy for a while.
But, if I open the trunk, then open the driver’s door, then
put the key in the ingnition and turn it ONLY ONE CLICK
FORWARD, wait for the dash lights to settle down and then
rock the valet switch 5 times, then it works like a charm.

Good luck.–

Yes, it’s a 95 with the egg-shaped fob. Annoyingly the
battery door is missing and it’s held in with tape.
Hopefully theres only one frequency used in the UK? None of
the examples of fobs on eBay state one or the other.

I get the car to go into learning mode by rocking the valet
switch but it appears not to pick up the signal from the fob
and therefore times out and makes the double-beeps after 15
seconds. I presume this means I’m doing it right. Did you
car give the impression you’d done it correctly before you
tried turning only as far as the 1st ignition position?–

Yes, that’s exactly what it did and exactly what drove me so
crazy. I would turn the ingition key to the second click,
then rock the valet switch, and it would chirp and appear to
be in programming mode. BUT, when I would hit the buttons
on the remote, nothing would happen. I tried it over and
over again for days. One day, I figured what the heck and
just turned it to the first position. PRESTO! Everything
worked just like it was supposed to. Give it a shot. Worst
case is it doesn’t work, but hey, it doesn’t work now.–

Hi josh

Are you using the correct batteries?

I bought a fob from Ebay and it came with just one fat
battery. I know that others have encountered this incorrect
replacement.

The correct batteries are thinner and the remote takes two.

The correct battery type is CR2016. IIRC 1.95 each
delivered next day FREE from http://www.watchbattery.co.uk/

In the UK, the frequency is 433 MHz. In the USA it’s 315 MHz.

I’m afraid that the LED lights may still work even though
the fob does not!

I cannot personally testify to the following information
which I found in the archives but it may help:

‘‘If you get another fob, be sure to get the correct part
number as, it is not enough just to get the correct
frequency. The XJ has various types of fobs such as part
nos:LJA2610BB and LJA2610BA. If your present fob ends with
BA the BB one cannot be programmed to your car and, vice
versa even though
they are both 433mhz.’’–

Thanks Gary, how strange, I’ve only got one battery. As
that’s what it came with, I figured that’s what I wanted and
bought the same battery type again.

I’ve seen references to the fob taking ‘batteries’ plural,
but I never imagined for one second that a single one would
fit and furthermore, make the LEDs flash in the place of two!–

Hi,

I can ABSOLUTELY confirm that the LEDs still flash even with 1 flat
battery! I put new Panasonic ones in my remote in the spring this
year, and last week I noticed the remote range was getting poor
until on Saturday it stopped working completely. The LEDs still
flashed though. Like you, I even tried the reprogramming method
which has worked fine for me in the past.

On inspection, one battery was 3.0V the other - zilch. I even
checked the RF output on a 433 MHz receiver AND a spectrum
analyser. Nothing, (but the SPARE remote was audible). As it
happens, I keep some spare batteries in the car together with the
reprogramming instructions and replacing the flat one (OK, I know I
should have replaced both!), it all worked fine and hadn’t even
lost it’s key sequence with the car.

The 2 batteries are in series giving a nominal 6V to the remote.
3V is obviously enough for the LEDs to work - but not the RF parts.

So, put 2 batteries in and I’m sure (hope!) it’ll be fine.

Cheers, Mike.–

Working now, thanks guys! I’ve really missed the convenience
of remote central locking since buying the Jag. I like the
remote headlights function, though I’ll never use it!

Bought some new buttons for it from eBay. Could really do
with replacing the missing battery cover. Any ideas other
than black electrical tape?

I wish the S-type fobs worked. More cheaply available and
look so much better. Same frequency but I’m sure they dont.–

Josh,

Go to your local Jag main dealer and ask them if they’ve got a
broken fob lying around. I did this and they gave me the battery
cover from a broken one.–

I ordered a ‘‘used’’ FOB replacement for my '97 XJ6L. Oddly,
it only came with one fat battery (3v). I programmed it but
the range was horrible. My old ones both had two batteries
(total 6v) and were originals. As soon as I put two
batteries in it, it worked fine. Don’t know why someone
would put a 3v battery in a unit needing 6v (other than to
make the LEDs flash and of course be cheaper to put in one
fat battery rather than put in two correct thinner
batteries).

The correct batteries: CR2016 (two each, so 3v x 2 = 6v)
Incorrect battery: CR2025 (thicker, so one will fit, but
only 3v)

Thought I’d update this thread with an FYI.–
