[x300] For Bruce, Throttle body experience

Gave it a few blasts (on the screws only) of that stuff you are
addicted to! Have just finished cleaning it!! ISCV came off NO prob
with a 5.5mm socket and a very quick shock from my battery
screwdriver (nothing ventured nothing gained) Wow!! the crap in
there was unbelieveable!!! Almost half a tin of carb cleaner but
its like a mirror now! Took TPS off first of course and cleaned
with switch cleaner(thanks guys)It’s a wonder it worked with all
the gunge on the plunger and seat of the ISCV. As for the throttle
body itself, oh my God,Past posts I had read talked of TB being
gummed up!! you could have peeled the sticky mess from both sides
of the butterfly with a knife. Am going to change at the weekend to
see if it clears my stall when cold problem, if not then I will
have a beautiful and clean spare throttlebody. Thanks to all at the
forum for their help and advice, 6 months ago I would never have
dreamed of doing this sort of job myself yet it is so easy and I
must add ‘‘satisfying’’ Alan 97 3.2 sport–

You lucky devil. Not many people who didn’t have to drill
those mounting bolts out. I believe the cam cover breather
is the culprit of the oily grime inside the throttle opening.

When I bought my Jag, I never thought I’d be able to dig in
as deep as I have. There’s other forums for sure. But none
of them have the same amount of expertise which the guys on
here do, it’s a goldmine of information. Even with all the
issues I’ve had over the past year, the advice has been
great, I would have given up and sold the car a long time
ago without it. I’ve learned so much in the past year and
although I’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg in that
time, the sense of achievement of knowing you’ve done the
work yourself and have learned in the process is priceless :-)–

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that throttle bodies are not
to be cleaned with carb cleaner but with throttle body cleaner,
instead. The difference being that a throttle body plenum has a
coating that can be damaged, or eliminated, with carb cleaner.–

Now I’m worried!!! Not only did I clean it with carb cleaner, I
have polished it to a mirror finish with solvol…! no need to
worry though, as I have a spare.(just in case) Have I been too
adventurous? Alan 97 3.2 sport–

Don’t worry, no special (or any) coating on a AJ16 TB.–

Thanks uncle, Perhaps somone can help further, when I disconnect
the sensors to replace the TB will the car have to re-learn the new
sensors?–

i have had problems with high idle speeds on my 1995 xj6 I tried
everything cleaning the throttle body etc I finally figured that my
problem might be the idle control valve so in desperation I bought
a new one Lucas aftermarket, when I went to take the old one off
the throttle body I used my torch and heated the surrounding alloy
casing carefully and the screws came away no problem, I installed
the new idle control valve and made adjustments as per instructions
on this forum the car now idles at 800rpm in park and 650rpm in
drive and 500rpm when cold which rises to 800rpm when hot, perhaps
this is not perfect but much better than before if it stays this
way I can live with it,

Al. The only two sensors in the throttle body are the idle
valve and throttle sensor, disconnecting them wouldn’t be a
big deal to the ECU. It might take a couple of starts to get
the idle valve synchronised again, from what I remember, it
closes fully when you turn off the ignition so it knows how
far to open next start. I unwittingly popped the plunger out
of mine and had to push it back in, it still works fine though.

As in previous posts, I did mess with the setting screws
but I don’t advise anyone else to unless they have the
problems I did. Mine just wouldn’t stop racing at idle,
there were signs the PO had removed the throttle body and
possibly skewed something. Adjusting everything worked for
me and now I have a bootiful start/idle speed, but what
worked for me won’t for everyone, admitted.

Good luck–
