[x300] handbrake slipping unless pulled with force

Handbrake slipping: any advice please, on adjustment - or do the
shoes ever need renewal? Mine’s gone 160k. Thanks.–

I would adjust them, they are conventional internal expanding
drum/shoe brakes. Youi can use a flat blade screwdriver to adjust
them from the rear.

By the way, a neglected component on these cars is the lower cam on
the e-brake shoe. It is at the bottom and can get corroded. Next
time you have your rotors off, lube it.–

Yes, they are easy enough to adjust. It’s also worth checking the
cable itself. Sometimes handbrakes on Auto box cars get so little
use the cable can become very tight and fail to ‘pull’ as well as
it could.–

In fact to adjust the handbrake shoes reliably you should first
back off the intermediate cable adjuster to be absoulately sure you
are not adjusting against a snug cable but purely the rear drums.
Then once the shoes are done you re-adjut the cable so the
handbrake lever clicks 3-5 times to fully on.

At 160K the shoes may be getting near to the end of their life,
depending on your use of the handbrake. This is especially true on
a manual car like yours Ant where you presumably use the handbrake
more than people do with automatics?

With most X300’s being Auto, it was a reasonable assumption to
make, there was no info. to the contrary. It was also assumed that
the enquirer knew how to adjust an handbrake properly but if I’m
wrong about that, you have put him straight.–

OK Pete, agreed. Just to help any of us help enquirees, such info.
is quite important. If I knew the car were an auto. I’d have
guessed the shoes were probably still OK, but if it were described
as a manual I’d have said not.–
