I’ve recentley bought my first Jag, what a beauty, 3.2 X300 Auto.
Yesterday, I would have said ‘Best Car in the World’ today I am
saying, ‘Molly is not well, will she live’?
I was travelling at around 40mph & eased off when approaching
traffic lights, the lights changed & as I picked up speed I lost
all drive. The engine runs but no drive in forward or reverse.
There is now a high pitched squeel on tickover, engine revs o.k.
upto the red band on the rev counter, there is oil on the
transmission dip stick but no drive in forward or reverse!
Any ideas from you Jag Fans? Will Molly live?
If it’s bad news, I’ve got broad shoulders so tell it to me
straight & I’ll get one of the neighbours to tell the wife!

Did you check the transmission fluid properly, with the fluid hot
(after at least a 10 mile run) and with the enging running? There
is a cold mark on the dipstick if you have to check it cold, but
the engine must be running.
Usually low fluid is a cause of no drive. Sometimes the filter can
drop and the the pump sucks air instead of oil or the O ring
hardens and doesn’t seal against the pickup tube, so it might not
be a bad idea to do a fluid and filter change just on general
principals.–

Oh dear - hate to say it, but my big BMW did just that -
lost all drive in the middle of overtaking. Had to have a
lift home (car, me and wife). Wife not impressed.
The big BMW (528i) had the same 4HP22 gearbox, though it was
over 180,000 miles. The first second-hand replacement had
the same fault but then we found a really good one that
lasted until the car was scrapped.
I shall be pleased if I am proved to be wrong on this occasion.

Sounds like the torque converter’s trashed, or you’re out of fluid.
Worst case scenario is you’ll need a rebuilt or replacement
transmission. With a VERY clean rag, wipe off the transmission stick,
start the car, get it to warm, and then check the level. If it’s
within spec, it’s time to send it to a specialist. If it’s low, you
may have just found the problem. Don’t despair, there’s undoubtedly
life left in the old girl yet.
