[x300] Headlamp Cleanup

Could someone tell me what is the easiest way to cleanup
headlamp reflector for X308? There is some dust inside, and
I want to cleanup everything. Probably it will be needed to
remove headlamp assembly, but maybe there is an easier way?

If you will check out this photo - http://www.lipskas.com/
daimler/003.JPG - you will clearly see some dust on
reflector. And it really drives me crazy.–

Hello there…there is no really easy way to clean inside of
headlight units succesfully without removal I’m afraid.
Please see the web site below where I detail how to do it.

Fill up a sink with fairly hot water and a small amount of
dishwasher detergent. Let them soak for around ten minutes then
take each light unit full with water, invert and shake vigerously
several times, then rinse thouroughly with clean water a couple of
time to remove all residue.
Whatever you do, DO NOT touch inside reflector with anything as it
will scratch very easily. It is only plating on a plastic base
and is very fragile. you can very carefully use a long cotton
bud or small paint brush to clean the inside of the glass of any
residue, then rinse in warm water thouroughly.
To dry, use a combination of air drying and a hair dryer to
evaporate any water…you will be ammazed with the improvement.
It will be evn better if you replace the globes at the same time
with Philips ‘Night Vision +’ globes which are a direct repalcement
with 50% better light output at the same wattage.
Really makes an excellant light unit without placeing any extra
strain on the standard sytem.

Cheers,

Wow, thanks so much, this guide is very useful. How long
time it may take? I guess it could be done in 1-2 hours?

I’ll stick with my current bulbs, because car is equipped
with Xenon lights.–

Good method which will save your big dollars. Have a look at
the way I do it in the past for my X300 lights. It should be
in the archives.–

I was gonna ask about this tonight … funny coincidence …!

I noticed that Scrapper’s headlights have that slightly
sandblasted (dull) look to them, instead of shiny and new … I
figured I would either have to replace them with new units (how
much?) or use that kit that polishes them new, using special cream
and a buffing wheel on a drill motor .

I always assumed the headlights on our X-300s are sealed units,
but your post makes it sound like they’re not and the dull look
could just be dust accumulated on the inside of the units (?)–

You wouldn’t believe the cost for 2 new lenses. On the
X300, you will probably pay more than $500. for two.–

It only takes a couple of hours to clean them up and dry them out
and replace them in position.
If you intend using the original globes, that’s fine, just remember
to clean up the connectors and clean the earthing points attached
to the chassis just behind the light units. You will be
surprised at the improvement.

Wow … sounds great then … I take it they have like halogen
bulbs inside the units that can be pulled out? Is it possible to
clean the inside of the units ‘‘in situ’’? The online book makes it
sound like the units just snap in and out (‘‘mounted on 3 ball
joints’’)

Btw, do our lights have the handy alignment knobs, as on the
XJ40s? I think my low beams are pointing a little low …–

They are semi sealed units with globe mounting in the rear.
Yes, they have three ball mounting points which are easily broken
as the plastic heat hardens.
Yes, they use two adjusters for both vertical amd lateral
adjustment.

No problems Atty…hope it has been an illuminating experience ;^)
Glad to be of help to a fellow jaglover.
Be warned…you can pull the light units directly out of their
sockets but as they age (if they are original) they will have ben
heat hardened so become brittle…it’s a bit of Russian Roulette
really as to whether you can do it safely.
If you really want good lights…replace your aging X300 units with
ones from an XJ8, they are far superior in every respect. Along
with replacement Phillipd globes and you have superb lights for
night driving.

Cheers,
MaxH–
