[x300] headlight bulb replacement 97 x300

Friends: I haven’t posted here in quite some time and am
looking for guidance because my CD is no longer readable
with current software.

My right low beam (US) is dim and yellowed and clearly
needs replacing. Is this a simple ‘‘extract old bulb, twist
in new bulb’’ proposition? Compounding the issue is that
the exterior lens part has comer loose from the cone-
shaped rear portion of the headlight assembly and will,
with vibration over time, rotate out of the proper
position. I can live with it and even get past inpsection
by rotating it to the correct position. My second question
would be to ask whether this particular issue would impact
my ability to replace the bulb.

Thanks in advance fofr any guidance, and I am happy to
take an answer off-line as well, at @Eliot_Brenner.

Thanks.

Eliot, check here for Jim butterworth’s write up on cleaning
and replacing X300 headlamp units, I’ve done both and have
X308 ones fitted and with High Intensity Bulbs they are many
times better.

Maximus Exj8 did an excellent write up with pics titled Now
I see the Light (or similar), if he still has it he may be
kind eniugh to post the URL.–

Neil: Thanks very much for the link to Jim Butterworth’s
material. I do recall how helpful he has been to the forum.
I will take a look at my lights this weekend and see about
extracting the offending unit. I would like to get both the
reflector part and the lens out, then epoxy the lens back
onto the reflector if possible.

I will also search for Maximus’s post as well.

Hopefully Maximus will step in because IIRC his
paper was in another Database not J-L so a Archive
search won’t help to find it, although it did do the
rounds.–

Hi Eliot. Welcome back. My X300 died of old age at 495,000
km. and I replaced it with an XK8. The reflector/lens combo
is attached by three ball pegs snapped into matching
sockets. These pop out with the gentle assistance of a pry
bar applied to the back of the reflector. I did this
several times because of rock breaks until I wizened up and
ordered headlight protectors from Jag. Unfortunately I do
not have the part number for you.–
