[x300] Help me name this little part

What are the two spongy buffer pieces on top of the
radiator called. Mine are totally falling apart due to age.
I want to replace them but I am not sure what they are
called. BTW does anyone know if jagbits.com carries them?–

AJ16er,

You should be able to get them from any of the usual suspects. Someone will
probably chime in with the technical name, but your description will be
enough for any of the parts houses to know what you mean. You might also ask
if there are a couple on the bottom. I think there are, but although my
radiator has been out, it wasn’t me who did the work.

Guys, there are two of the rusty coloured sponges on the
bottom, at least on mine, one’s been chewed up where the car
has hit a kerb or something at some point. Another job for
the summer…–

G’day,

They are called “Cooling Module Mounting Bushes” and there are four of them,
two at the top and two at the bottom of the radiator. They are a large
aluminium washer with a high density foam rubber bush bonded to it.

You have to remove the top radiator mounting panel and then the top two
bushes can be replaced easily, but before you do that to replace the bottom
two bushes you need to raise the radiator a little and remove the old bushes
and replace them.

This can all be done with out draining the cooling system, there is enough
flex in the hoses.

Jeff Watson.

Well - I’ve seen them called ‘‘radiator mount bushings’’ on a
few parts websites here in the States. They were completely
disintegrated on Millie (XJ6/96k), rough shape on the bottom
on the XJR (62k) and the VDP (32k). Before renewing these
bushings the radiator in the XJ6 was rattling freely around
in the lower mountings and causing quite a miserable racket
running over bumps. Of course, there were other things at
work as well… but that was by far the worst offender.

Age seems to quite a bit to do with the foam wearing away as
does use/mileage. You have to take the mounting bar off the
top of the radiator & condenser to get at these bushings so
you may as well renew the upper and lower condenser bushings
at the same time. I used all rubber replacements but it has
only been a year so I can’t speak to their longevity as
opposed to the more expensive OEM foam options. In 2016 we
will have to re-visit this thread…–

Remember if the car has Aircon it will also require the lower
condenser mounts at the same time but they are smaller. I also
replaced the lower rad mounting metal tray as this was very rusty
and was only 20 +VAT for a new one. I also repainted the new tray
as the paint was very thin on the new part.–

This is very good advice, although I can well imagine a lot of
American listers wondering how the radiator lower mount can get so
rusty it falls apart, when their car is totally rust-free after ten
years or more…grrrr!

For want of some very cheap foam bushes (even at Jag prices) you
risk chaffing a hole in an expenisve radiator or AC condenser. If
the top ones look suspect the bottom ones will be far worse
probably, as they are the same part but take the weight. Trouble
with using solid rubber ones (assuming you find an identically
shaped part, which sounds unlikely?) is that they will not be
compliant enough and will pass more of the vibration to the sheet
metal heat exchangers and their pipework, possibly leading to
fatigue failures similar to the metal to metal cracking from
running with worn foams?–
