[x300] High idle

To all who can help, my Daimler six 1996 X300 has a high idle of
1800 rpm, now I know it should be 800, could anyone direct me to
the possible causes, befor I dive in a wreck something.–

Can you get back to a more normal idle by manually closing the
butterfly with the bellcrank?

If so, you might have the common dirty throttle body.–

No, have now removedhousing and going to clean while still
assembled, will remove the ISCV and clean separatly.–

throttle housing stripped cleaned and reassembled ISCV in good
condition looks new, have noted that no gasket throttle body to
manifold and area looks dirty and pitted with crap, hope this is
the problem, might be lucky.–

The AJ6 Engineering site has the correct procedure for setting
base idle (http://www.jagweb.com/aj6eng/fault_codes.php);make
sure that throttle body and stepper motor bits are all clean.
Throttle position switch setting - backprobe centre wire of
connector, should be 0.6v with ignition switched on and
throttle at rest.–

Thankyou but note that all references are for the AJ6 engine not
AJ16 X300 engine there is quite alot of difference so I have found
out.–

I was wondering if anyone knows if the TP% should be at zero
when at idle.I have just replaced the idler stepper motor(new)
and the high idle(1000-1100rpm)still exists.I believe the next
step would be the Throttle Position Sensor which on the
scanner reads 6.5%. As the idle stepper controls idle I would
of thought that this value should be 0%.
Any help would be most welcome.

The TPS is set with the appropriate diagnostic computer.
PDU, WDS, IDS, (AutoLogic?, AutoEnginuity?) can be used.

You don’t adjust the TPS mechanically, you tell the ECM that
the TPS is at idle and the ECM is configured to accept that
position.

I have heard of people cutting slots or drilling the mount
holes LARGER to be able to adjust the sensor. That is NOT
the correct way but it might ‘a way’.

David,

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a properly set up and
functioning TPS reading zero at managed idle.

If that were the case, there would be no margin for wear
etc. A typical figure is 5% at managed idle, or if using a
voltmeter, around 0.5V.

Gentlemen
The idle had increased to 11/12% and so I removed the
throttle body, cleaned everything up and then performed the
cheat you suggested using a Dremel to elongate the fixing
holes.I have it down to 5.7% and it idles at about 800/850.
This is slightly high but I will see how it goes and look into
it later.
Thank you Bob and Steve

Little late here but I chased a high idle for months doing all of the above, spending a lot of money and time when I spent 5 bucks on a new spring. Never had another problem, smoothest it has been in years.

My problem is that I had already changed the spring as per a recall from years ago so I resorted to the ‘mechanical’ fix/cheat. So far it works except …on start up the engine revs do not rise as high as they used to.
Seasons Greetings

AJ16 engines typically need a “base idle reset” performed only by diagnostic computers equipped with Jaguar specific software. PDU, WDS, IDS can all do this. Not sure anything else you do to the engine can reset those parameters.

Take it to a shop that works with jags, and they’ll fix the problem for you. If not, you’ll be chasing theories and possibly throw parts at the car like I did before I finally found the only solution.

I am having a similar problem with my 3.2 sport. She seems to be idling at around 1200rpm, not matter what you do, however if you disconnect the throttle cable completely, the idle drops to around 600rpm (what I imagine is correct).
The idle also drops momentarily when you select a gear, although I suspect this happens regardless.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Welcome to the forum Joshua.
Silly question but have you tried adjusting the throttle cable rather than just disconnecting it?

Thank you very much and I have indeed. It has made a very marginal difference (around 50rpm) and seems to have released all the tension in the throttle cable, but the idle still doesn’t seem to want to drop any further until you disconnect it altogether.
I am most confused

Ok have you sprayed starter fluid around the intake manifold to see if the revs raise further? That will indicate a leak some where in the inlet manifold gasket. If that proves negative then I would be looking at the gap in the throttle body butterfly, should be .002”

If the idle drops to 600 rpm but goes back up when reconnected, spray around the spindle area it could be a worn throttle body, if you spray and the idle drops then goes back up it could be the cause.
The idle should be 750 rpm.
