So how did setting the gap come out?

I learned (painfully) about high idle several years ago. The
simplest fix can just be getting the throttle plate to close all
the way. There was apparently a bulletin for changing the spring,
so this can be the issue. Not so in my case.

The second issue can be improper operation of the Idle stepper
valve. I fooled with that for months, and after I let the reset
function eject the pintle (I was not alone, see archives), I got a
new valve. Still no joy.

Throw in a few TB cleanings, a TPS contact cleaning or two and test
after test for smooth TPS operation, and I was pretty frustrated.

Then, I did a TPS calibration and suddenly all was well. What I
have learned since is that the ECU, which controls the idle speed
via the idle stepper valve, can’t / won’t attempt to control unless
it senses the TPS is at, well, IDLE! That is a very sensitive
detection and requires the TPS to be very close to the proper,
calibrated, closed throttle position.

Now, as to how much play is in the TPS mounting, why my TPS became
miscalibrated after 14 years, or any other question about why the
calibration was needed, I do not know. But I do know that the
recalibration fixed the idle control.

Good luck.–
