[x300] High mileage x300 early 1995

I have just purchased a 1995 3.2 sovreign which I was told had
86,000 miles, I have mangaged to piece together information which
leads me to believe that the true mileage is around 240,000. I am
negotiating with the private seller however I am interested to know
about other experiences if such a high mileage. The engine sounds
fine, perhaps a little noisy under hard acceleration. The
differential or back axle hums and rumbles other than that the oil
pressure guage flashes red on idle but comes up when the revs
increase, the fuel sender seems iffy, and the heater does not work.
Without the noise from the rear I suspect nobody would know about
the miles. Any things I should be aware of or look for so that I
can get this checked?

Regards,

‘Did you run a carfax’ I bought the car without first running a
check. I have now done this and it highlights that the car did over
200,000 about 18 months ago. Bought it on that old fashioned thing
called trust!–

Presume you purchased at a good low price. An 95 XJR owner on this
list has achieved 210k without major problems. Fuel and oil
pressure senders can be fixed by changing oil pressure sender unit
down by oil filter housing and fuel sender by filling to top of
tank each time to clean the sender unit in fuel moving in tank. See
archives for more details. Noisy engine could be cracked exhaust
manifold -common and fixable see archives. Rear rumble ( diff?)
more expensive maybe 1000 but I recall seeing an ad from a firm
near or in Liverpool offering a change whilst you wait. There are
others in UK which I am guessing is your country of residence.
Please check rear wheel arch tops on 95 models for incipient or
actual rust 200-600 to fix properly each side and front discs
prone to warp. Otherwise you have bought a great car.-
Enjoy it and your feelings toward BMW/Merc sheep-lemmings.

Thanks for the replies. I have arranged for the car to be looked at
by the local independant jag specialist in Glasgow.–
