[x300] How can I reset/erase the LTFT history?

I’ve tried touching the battery cables together but it didn’t work. Is this
something that requires a Jag-specific scan tool?

Cheers

Hi Doug,

Is it really history (old codes) or is the problem ongoing?–

Hi Doug,
Myself and quite a few other listers appear to have LTFT’s
pegged at around 95%. This seems to be mostly confined to '95 model
cars.
My STFT’s read fine @ +/- 1% but LTFT’s stuck at 92%. Has passed
emmisions test (MOT in UK) for the past 5 years with no problems so
I think LTFT’s are giving a false reading.
Maybe the scan tool is mis-interpreting the reading or even
accessing the wrong address in ECU. According to ‘‘XJREngineer’’, the
LTFT’s should only read to a maximum of +/- 25%.
If your STFT’s are within spec I would be inclined to forget about
it.

Sorry, can you speak in English please ?

LTFT = ?

STFT = ?

Can this sort of code be read on simpler scan tools (I have
a ScanGauge II which seems to do most things) - or would I
need to buy an even more sophisticated bit of soft/hard ware
to come level with the cognoscenti ?

Or (with no codes showing and a valid and very recent
M.O.T.) - maybe ignorance is bliss?

also somewhat alarmed at the advice to touch the battery
cables together ?

Just because you’re not paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not
out to get you–

Panic ye not Jim,

Long Term Fuel Trim
Short Term Fuel Trim

Live data values such as LTFT can only be read with a
scanner and computer, not a code reader which will show the
Fault Code which only indicates a fault/problem not the
actual value. So ignorance may well mean bliss!

Also touching the cables was done (I guess) disconnected
from the battery, with the aim of clearing down any residual
logic levels by earthing them.–

Heh heh…I’m only too well aware of the possibilities as I’ve been
battling the issue for 2-3 years myself.

Replacing two cracked exhaust manifolds brought my STFT within spec so I’m
not really concerned about the matter. It’s just that having the LTFT
reading so high is sorta like having an itch that you can’t scratch :-).
I’d really like to reset the history and see what happens.

Right, cables disconnected. On many systems doing this will clear the
residual data.

Right on Doug, when I think back to the 1970’s ‘‘Winter of
Discontent’’ in the UK, I was working in a fairly junior role
a a Test Engineer for a major Defence Electronics
manufacturer and to overcome the lack of power at night due
to ‘‘energy saving’’ we had commandeered some huge Houchin
diesel generators from somewhere (nearby US Base?). one
night one of these would not turn over and in the gloom I
decided to improvise some jump leads and the inevitable
happened, I got it wrong and lead tinned my hand along with
vaporising the terminal on one battery (which probably cost
as much I earned in a month).

That night, production dipped as I spent the next 8 or so
hours building up and filing/fashioning a new terminal out
of reels and reels of lead solder. Never made that mistake
since, but have witnessed some spectacular displays when
colleges have managed to short out 400 Amp/440 volt 3 phase
bus bars!

Sort of clears everything including your eyesight and the
wax in your ears.–

We had a 440volt 3phase cable short out when I worked for
the BBC. VERY loud BANG in the middle of the night; we
looked around the transmitter station for a full 15 minutes
befiore we found what had caused the bang in the switchroom.

All the surrounding metal work (and it was thick plate) was
bent out of shape and the cable end vapourised. Powerful
stuff that 'lectric !

As it happened we were running off the other cable so no
loss of service.

No matter how much you push the envelope, it’ll still be
