[x300] I asked for advice abt 3,2 vs 4,0. Reporting back

I am glad I found this forum on internet. I have alreadey learned a
lot. A few days ago I asked you jag-lovers for advice about the
decision I was about to make - 4,0 vs 3,2 xj6. I mentioned in my
posting that the price diff here in Norway was 12K USD, and I noted
with humour and a little sadness your comments about the price.
Anyway, as it turned out - yesterday I tried a XJR. The decision
was suddenly very easy. I am since yesterday the proud owner of a
96 XJR. (I will not ask your advice how to fully convince my wife
that the my choice in this process of choosing between 3,2 and 4,0
was sound when I ended up with a XJR…).
Regarding your comments about price. In Norway (tax) a XJ6/XJR cost
new USD 190K to 210K. I payed USD 50K for my 1996 XJR with 60K
miles. As I tell my wife - it is beautiful and worth every cent. I
am pleased to report she now reluctantly agrees. (We have a small
Subary and a Grand Cherokee in my family, and my new Jag is the toy
I want for Christmas). I look forward to cruising through Europe
next summer … assuming I will keep my driving licence …

Now to the point. How do I open the trunk ? I can open it from the
button inside the car, but I can not open it by pressing the button
on the trunk lid, or with the key. Is the ‘‘valet’’ button a ‘‘toggle’’
button ? I can not figure out how this works. Do you have any
advice ? Could it be an electrical problem ?

Anyway you are welcome to hang on when I cruise throug the
mountains here in Norway, or along the Med coast next summer.
Greetings from Norway

After picking myself off the floor from falling off my couch…

You are telling us that a brand new XJR in Norway costs $190,000 to $210,000
US Dollars, and a used 1996 XJR costs $50,000?

My gosh man you must be joking.

Are you sure that you paid 50K USD for 96 car?
By USD did you mean US dollars?
Anyway excelent choice. I’m pretty sure that you are mistaken and
it’s 50 something Norvay currency.
What I found on internet 1 USD=8.8 NOK.
So 50K nok =6250 USD that is pretty good price.–

This is too funny I guess you guys dont know how good we have it
here in the good old us of a. anyways I just recieved the yearly
car book from the old country(denmark) and a xjr list for 1925000
dkr appx.$ 320800 but I can promise you that Eysten (any norwegian)
make a little more than 6 bucks an hour. Also the average hospital
visit is not $ 50000 like here.
I dont know the car tax in Norway but in Denmark it is 180% plus
of course the regular sales tax of 25%

It is interesting to see comments about prices on XJR in Norway.
In Sweden you can buy an XJR, 1996, with 60000 miles for 170 000
SEK (around 23 000 USD) or cheaper.
I was also in the choice betweeen an XJR or an 3.2 l Sport from
1996 but I took the XJ Sport and paid 119 000 SEK (16 000 USD)for
it (with 85 000 miles). I am very happy with that car.
I am sorry that I not can help you with the trunk problem. My trunk
opens without problems.–

I assure you I am serious about the price. Heavy expensive cars are
taxed very high in Norway. Evan a small family car probably cost 2-
3 times as much here as in US or in most European contries. Still
we have one of the the highest standard of living in the world.

But back to my question about trunk. No advice from anyone ?–

Do you have a green Valet key as well as your black normal keys?

The trunk should open with the black key
but they often stick because nobody ever uses the key for years and
years. Spray a little WD40 or similar into it and wiggle the key
for 30 seconds. It should work.

There is often a fault however with the wiring on the right hand
side of the turnk (it follows the line of the hinge) and it can
break in oplder cars. Once you get the trunk open look for these
wires and look for a broken one. This should fix it. the Valet
switch DOES prevent the boot from opening but only with the button
or the inside switch. I forget the sequence. If you are stuck give
me an email and I will look it up in the handbook. It is all in the
handbook. Did you not get this with your car?–

The other problem can be the button switch itself - since it also can be
used very infrequently. I spent ages tracing wiring on my 97 Sovereign
before discovering that dirt in the switch was the problem. A squirt of
WD40 or similar should fix this as well.

There is a valet button in central console between seats.
But it shouldn’t matter if you have black key. Try to clean locking
mechanism with some lubricant. Sometimes it stucks if you are not
using it pretty often. Can you unlock 4 doors and press this
button? I guess if car is closed you cannot open a trank as well.–

Thank you for replies. The situation about my boot lock is this:

Boot opens from switch on steering console.
Light in boot works fine.
Pressing the button on the boot lid gives no reaction.
The keylock on the boot seems to work (key turnes all right).
I use the black key.
The remote works fine on all doors.

Could there be a separate fuse for sully of power to the boot lid
switch ? If not I guess it must be the switch itself. Any advice ?–

Dear EKD
On '95 model my boot button has intermittent working sometimes. To
make it work I just open and close all doors with key fob and start
and stop engine. This seems ot fix it. Boot button than works OK.
Good luck, you have purchased a beautiful car, worth every penny.–

Just to be clear, the boot release works on the second press of the
unlock button on the black key. The second press to unlock the
boot has to be within a second or two of the first press to unlock
the door.

It’s a beautiful car, very fast. Have fun.–

does anyone know what colour wire is the trigger for the boot release on the loom attached to the right hinge?
