I passed on the eBay XJ12. It was so perfect, but some
things were fishy and put me off.
It was a '95 (short wheel base) BRG on Biscuit with 41k
miles and it sold for $12k. The car appeared to be in
pristine shape, however, the owner says that he changed out
the hides due to his being a perfectionist and they original
hides weren’t right (no further explanation there).
Additionally, when I ran a carfax report on the VIN, it was
returned as ‘‘invalid’’. That was enough to make me question
the car.
BUT if it was for real, I let a good one get away. I’ll just
have to live with that.–

About the XJ12. An old friend of mine once said, “I never lost money
on a deal I didn’t do.” The same can be said for a car we didn’t buy!
What’s more, if it looks fishy, smells fishy and swims, it must be
fishy!
Besides, hold out for that special, long wheelbase '96 with the better
ignition and in pristine condition. It won’t cost a penny more.
In reply to a message from Earl Kiker sent Sat 14 Jan 2006:
i dropped on with my xj12, everything is perfect, the leather
shouldnt need to be replaced at 41k, myn has 53k on it and the
interior is like brand new. I kept my eye on that one on ebay, and
the other one with 30+k miles was better in my opinion, but more
expensive. Another one will come along and you know it 'll be right–

However, one clarification is needed in your post. There are no differences
in drivetrain between the 95 and 96 XJ12s. Both model years employ the
Denso engine management system (distributorless ignition) with Denso
accessories (A/C compressor and alternator). Apparently, a few XJ12s were
available as 97 models (as the electrical guide provides wiring diagrams for
this model), but they were probably for special order only. The earlier
XJ12s in XJ81 form still maintained the distributor.
