[x300] loose windscreen wiper

Hi all. I’ve a 1998 XJ8 4 litre. My windscreen wiper has gone all
loose and doesn’t move, thought the motor is working. The top nut
is tight.

Windscreen was frozen last week and my knee accidently switched on
the wiper for a few seconds, but of course it didn’t move cos of
ice.

Not sure how arm attaches to motor, nor how to access it. Hope I
haven’t done any major damage - any ideas anyone???

It sounds to me like the splines have been worn. I hope, for
your sake, that the wear is on the arm rather than the motor
shaft…from what I recall, removing the wiper motor is a
mission, quite apart from the expense.–

Hi Ian,

If the splines are worn to the point of failure I’d be
surprised, much more likely to have dislodged a link or had
a fixing (grub screw, cam or similar) come loose. It’s
almost impossible for the spines to wear as they’re in
nearly full contact whilst in use with almost zero load!–

It did move across drivers side only to begin with, then ‘slipped’
across to passenger side before finally giving up the ghost. Also I
can physically move the arm across the windscreen by hand with no
resistance. A sign that the splines are buggered???–

Simon,

Still most likely to be a coupling either in or external to
the motor INMHO! Not sure how the the arm is fixed on a XJ8,
but easy to see, either lift the cover and take off the nut
or release the retaining clip and side/pull off the arm you
should then be able to check the splines. If it is inside
the motor or inboard under the bonnet you may have to delve
in order to secure the shaft when you undo the nut.

Make sure that you reference the relative positions of the
arm and the shaft or it may prove difficult to get it to
wipe the correct quadrant when you reassemble it all. Been
there done it on a Ford Capri years ago!–

All fixed. The nut securing the arm was loose, although I couldn’t
tell using just my fingers, it was obvious once I had a spanner on
it. That’s a relief! Thanks to all who replied. Simon–

Hi Simon,

Glad it was an easy fix and thanks for letting us know,
often major issues seem to be ‘‘open ended’’ which doesn’t
help the Knowledge Bank.–

Wondering whether I have fixed it: It works and seems solid enough,
but surely if the splines are okay it would work even with the nut
not very tight, or even off??? Maybe I should get the thing off
and have a look or maybe leave well alone…–

Never looked, could be splines (unlikely to have been
wrung!) maybe be a taper. If it ain’t broke, NEVER try and
fix it!–

Simon,

Just had similar problem on my 1997 V8. The problem was the nut
that attaches the arm mechanism.

Easy to get to, just relase the plastic covers in front of the
bulkhead and the mechanism is exposed. You will see the linkage
and the nut that secures it.

Might be worth checking first.

Good luck

Yeah you may have just tightened it down on the shaft…but if it
works…Id leave it alone…

Good luck…
