Can anyone explain the function of the MAF sensor on a 1997 xj-6.
Could a bad one explain not starting after siting awhile but yet
starting and running good once it is running. Also, upon looking
down the inlet tube to the ‘‘wires’’ I couldn’t believe how small in
diameter they are. Are they prone to get dirty or ‘‘burn up’’ and
break. I couldn’t tell if they were still intact and I don’t want
to drill the rivets out to pull it out of housing to inspect them
unless I have to. Is it acceptable to spray some kind of cleaner in
there to clean the ‘‘wires’’?

Cleaning is not always successful, now and then the thing does not
survive at all. I doubt that the AM meter is the cause of poor cold
starting if it runs OK afterward.
You might check the self cleaning ‘burn off’ cycle. The cheapest
and best way to check the entire thing is too fit it to a car that
starts fine, and then see if it doesn’t.

Same here, doubt the AM is the problem.
Still cleaning it, won’t hurt. I’ve used electronic contact
spray in the past. Doesn’t leave any deposits, cleans and
dries pretty quickly.
You can get special AM spray from the Autozones of this world.
I suspect it is just electronic contact spray in a different
can and a more expensive price tag.
