[x300] Mechanic in a bottle fixed pinion leak

My 97 XJ differential had been leaking at the drive shaft seal.
I had switched to a heavier weight 140 synthetic oil but it still
leaked. In all my years of fixing cars I have never found an
additive that worked, wheather for a radiator or transmission leak.
I was at Pep Boys and found a Lucas Oil product that claims to stop
transmission leaks, added 6 oz. of this very thick stuff to diff.
and the leak is gone. Today there are drops of oil under the
engine, I don’t think Jaguars are happy unless they are leaking
something.

Why not just fix the problem the right way instead of applying a band-aid?

The car should not leak anything from anywhere except for the windshield
washers when you hit the spray.

Jaguar owner walks in to the parts department and asks the
manager, ‘‘Do you have Mechanic in a Bottle?’’. The parts manager
answers, ‘‘Yes we do’’. The Jaguar owner , replies, ‘’ Well, then
let him out’’–

I believe at least one member had success with a seal swelling
additive in the differential. I also had success on my wifes car
with a transmission oil stop leak and shifting additive that
stopped a leak (about 75000km and 5 years ago) on one of her high
pressure lines about five years ago. The car, a 1993 Intrepid which
recently met it’s Chrysleresque demise by nearly losing a left
front wheel never had another tranny leak or transmission problem
in spite of it having 255,000km on the odometer.
Like all seal conditioners, it takes a period of days, weeks or
even months to completely stop the leak (as long as it is a minor
one).

Hurrah for Mechanics in a Bottle!

The product was ‘‘Wynn’s Transmission Treatment and Stop Leak’’ 325ml
UPC7357956222.
It says it is formulated to stop and prevent seal leaks, revitalize
seals and O-rings, prevent oxidation and prolong fluid life,
compatible with all factory approved transmission fluids.–

something.
Well said, and I have said this with when referring to my '66 E-Type, which
likes to drip little spots here and there after it gets “driven”.
However, the wife’s 95 XJR doesn’t have this problem, it leaks nothing.
(So…How can I be sure if the XJR is really Happy? -haha)
…at least I know my wife is Happy with it!.

Isn’t there a potential downside to adding a thickening agent to
the differential oil? Increased wear and friction? Decreased
performance and fuel mileage?
Personally, I do not like “Oil Additives” that are intended to “prevent/stop
leaks and/or oil consumption, boost compression , add performance
etc…”…
I have not used any such products on either of the Jaguars we have, …
…but I did use Oil Additives at one time for my various B-Body (77-90)
Chevy Caprices - I’ve gone through 5 of 'em, and all reached 200K+ Miles.
In my opinion, the additives did not help, and if anything, I feel they were
likely detrimental.
I still have two Caprices, an '88 (160K+ Miles) & '89 (42K Miles) and I
refuse to “band aid” leaks - I simply “live with it” if it’s a minor leak
(if I feel that the “leak” it is tolerable, such as an occasional drip or
two) , otherwise I’ll fix it.
