[x300] Need help with Idle problem

Good morning: Gentleman. I was out with the jag this morning and
after waiting a while for my wife to get out of a store (with the
car Idleing) I went to leave for home. While at a light the car
started Idleing rough. The ‘‘restricted performance’’ light came on
and the check engine light also. I pulled over checked the oil and
it was fine so I mad for home. the car was not over heating or
blowing any smoke. It rans smooth on acceleration but continued to
labor at idle all the way home (about 10 miles). When excellerating
the check engine light would flicker and the remain constant a
higher speed. I though maybe a fouled plug (but how?). When I got
home I looked under the hood but couldn’t find the spark plugs or
coils. are they under the plastic cover? Help this new Jag owner
please.

The first thing to do is read the codes, then you will know what to
do. The dealer, some auto parts places or a shop can do it, or you
can buy a reader and do it yourself.–

Hello Ed,
As Brian has said plus, it’s rare for the coils to give problems on
a V8. They are ‘coil over plug’ units which means the coils sit
seperately on top of each plug, hence no leads to wory about.
A very typical problem with rough idling usually points toward the
throttle position sensor (situated on the r/hand side of the
thrott;e body which is situated at the rear of the intake plenum.
Also, another culprit can be the coolant temperature sensor which
is situated to the right of the ‘coolant tower’ at front of engine.
Check and clean connectors with spray contact cleaner/lubricant.
DO NOT use crap like WD40 any where near electronics, they don’t
appreciate it.
Also check all fuses and relays which are under two covers at the
left/front of engine bay.
If you don’t feel confident enough in tackling these issues, please
take it to a professional to have codes read and any remedial work
performed…you will have piece of mind and ‘El Goto’ will thank
you for it :^)

Cheers,
MaxH–

For the benefit of my culture, are the V8 as sensible as the L6
regarding throttle body cleaning ? This is an issue on L6s.

A good TB cleaning resolves this problem on the x300s.–
