[x300] Odd sized screw

Working on replacing shift cable on 96 X300, two screws holding
box above shifter on the right, can’t get socket on them.
9mm is too big, and 8mm is too, just slightly, too small. I’m
stumped. Is there any such thing as an 8.5mm socket?

Hi Lee,
That is almost unprecedented ! The only time I ever saw that was when a
bolt/nut had withered by way of corrosion to a size unbeknownst to man !!!

I know, me too. But they’re inside the console. Perfect condition
but for some corner wear on the front one from me trying to force
the 8mm socket on and turning it before I finally gave up thinking
it’s got to work this time. Have to use a universal so can’t get a
straight shot to pound it on, I tried. No room for vice grips, adj
wrench, a boltout extractor, a moto-tool w/cutoff wheel, and it’s
too delicate to take a chisel to it, but I’m really tempted. Next
I’m going to try filing a little bit out of an open end 8mm to make
my own 8mm+ wrench I guess.

Lee,

I don’t believe they would do it - but it is a Jaguar!

Could that bolt be a 2BA or a Whitworth or BSF?

For comparison some nominal jaw sizes:-

5/16 AF = 0.313’’
8 mm = 0.315’’
2 BA = 0.324’’
1/8’’ Whitworth : 3/16 BSF = 0.338’’
11/32 AF = 0.344’’
9 mm = 0.354’’

Good luck! ;-)–

Got a dial caliper on the front one and it measures 8.3mm or .32’’
so it seems it may be a 2BA. Now where do I find that?–

Well that was easy, googled 2BA wrench and came up with British
Tool and Fasteners www.britishfasters.com
They have BA tools, got a complete set of sockets 0BA-10BA @ 75.
They also have Whitworth tools and British specific fasteners.
Now we’ll see if that answers the problem…

I don’t know, but on the British Fasteners site they said BA
fasteners are mostly used in electrical applications. In this case
they, if they are BA, are holding the linear switch I think it’s
called to the side of the shifter mechanism. Not really an
electrical app., but sort of. To add insult to injury the heads are
phillips, but it doesn’t matter no way to get a screwdriver in
there anyway. Maybe they had a lot of just the right size screws in
a drawer, and the bean counters wanted to use them up, before
ordering metric, or SAE screws??? Once I get them out, I’m throwing
them as far as I can and replacing.

Definitely BA2 fasteners… Sockets came today, immediately tried
the BA2 socket and had both screws out in 2 minutes, maybe five.
Why BA2? Probably the only two in the whole car…I really hope so.
For anyone who needs to change the shifter cable…now you know.
Also they were tight, so tight I couldn’t have broken them loose at
the Phillips head end even if I could have gotten to them, so, so
much for taking the console out, which is what the manual said.
Picture Mel Brooks face as the monster comes to life in Young
Frankenstein…Success!!!
