[x300] p0336 returns

Help…I can’t seem to get rid of this code.Ihave a 1996 x-305 6.0
litre. When I put the car in gear the mil light comes back and the
revs are limited to 2800rpms. I can clear code and if not in gear
it will rev to normal limits. The transmission has been replaced
and the gear shift is not adjusted properly.By this I mean I have
tyomove to the far left before it strrts to move in drive, Could
this influence the speed sensor code? It shifts normally. Best

Sounds like the Crank Position Sensor is bad, or it’s circuit is
damaged. I would replace it after checking the harness for damage
and see if that fixes it. This is a common problem area.–

Thanks Brian, new crank sensor,I’ll check wiring. Are we talking
about the frt one under the harmonic balancer? thanks–

I just realized you have the 12, I’m not sure 0336 means the same
thing on this car. The code probably means crank sensor but the
symptoms mean something else…maybe a harness/connector problem
with the tranny control module or the misadjusted shifter/rotary
switch. Sorry to be confusing, I just read too fast sometimes.–

Brian thanks again…it actually is the engine speed sensor at rear
of engine.I just replaced it also. I erased code and can rev engine
as normal. When I put it in gear the code comes back and the revs
are limited to 3000rpms. I think you may have hit on something
because the transmission was replaced before I bought it.It shifts
well but the selector is not adjusted properly.By this I mean I
have to push the gear selector to the far left ‘‘D’’. If I select the
normal ‘‘D’’'it wont engage drive.Could this signal the ecm to throw
a limp in mode or the rev limiter that I talked about? My book says
that p0336 is speed sensor out of range. There is also a p1000 code
that sets along with it. Thanks for your help–

I would get the shifter adjusted correctly, this is the first
suspect. The speed sensor in question is probably inside the
tranny. There are no speed sensors as such on the engine that I
know of.–

Thanks I’ll adjust and keep you posted. My manual shows a frt.
crankshaft sensor,a engine speed sensor,a camshaft sensor.The
engine speed sensor is behind the throttle bellcrank and bolts to
the valley reaching in the sensor sits at a right angle to a
reluctor wheel that bolts to the crankshaft flange behind the
flywheel. I think there are two speed sensors on the GM 4speed auto
but I have to check.I think they arer on the outside of the
transmission. Thanks for your help.–

G’day Jerald,

There are two speed sensors on the GM 4L80E transmission and they
are both on the LHS and secured by a small bolt and metal cover.
With a bit of fiddling they are removable in situ.

Regards,
Jeff Watson.

Hi Jerald, I am the owner of a 1995 DD6 with what looks like a very similar issue. It starts and run well until 2000 rpm. The revs won’t go any higher. It goes to my mecanic this afternoon (since I don’t have an OBD2). had you sorted it out this issue ?
Thank you,
Stephan

Yes,Stephan I after many trials found it to be the flywheel ferite plate. At the back of the engine in the area near firewall in the"V" is a sensor “magnet” that passes a signal to ECM for engine rotational speed. The ferrite bolted to the crankshaft passes
through the sensor magnet. This is on my 6.0 v-12. I thought it would be the sensor .No such luck! Easy to check though produces ac voltage. I had to remove transmission and replace the ferrite disc.It was bent in several places.Be sure to observe torque specs. It
now runs perfectly What an engine!!! By the way the 1994 xj-12 is totally different 6.0 v-12. After the 1994 Jaguar switched to Nippondenso ignition set-up no distributor. Both 1995 and 1996 use Nippon electronics. Thank goodness! I hope this helps Robert

Hi Jerald,
Many thanks for your help. I will check these points in the coming week when I have a chance to look at the engine.

I will keep you posted about my findings.

Cheers

Stéphane
