[x300] P0455: Sometimes you just get lucky

Been looking to resolve the P0455 error code on my '02 VDP.

Was really surprised at how little information I could find
on the problem and it’s correction, was dismayed that I’ve
been unable to find a copy of JHM1190, the Jaguar Trust’s
DVD version of the service and supplemental manuals.

Purge valve, gas cap, canister control valve, rubber hoses:
There’s a plethora of possible causes, but a dearth of
trouble shooting info. Plenty of info on the XK8, not so on
the XJ8.

Started at the purge valve (easy to get to!), seemed
perfect, diaphragm was soft and seemed effectively sealing,
coil seemed to correctly open and close the vacuum bleed valve.

I cleared away the trim from the fuel tank, no sign of
problems or loose/rotted hoses there.

Found the canister control valve under the car, right hand
side, forward of the rear suspension. Again, seemed perfect.

Followed the vent tube from the charcoal canister to the
left side of the car and a 2nd charcoal canister.

There, I see one of the hoses has popped out of the canister.

Say what?? No wonder I was getting a large evap system leak
but what’s up with having a pair of canisters?

Easy fix in my case, guess I should have started under the
car with the difficult to get to bits rather than the easier
top side stuff but still, I think I got lucky on this one.
Zero cost, just a bit of poking around.

Guess my only question is why the fitting had popped out of
the canister. Can’t imagine the system over pressurizing so
far as to blow the fitting free, but it’s tucked up out of
the way so far I can’t see an accidental snag either. Think
about all I can do is wait to see if the fitting pops free
again or not.–

Win…as these cars get older, this sort of thing is going to get
more common.
You can blame your Federal Legislators for wanting to have two
canisters
After all, it is a V8 ;o))

Cheers,
